Wildcats Split Pair on Second Day at UNLV Desert Classic

The Weber State softball team split a pair of games on Saturday in the second day of play at the UNLV Desert Classic, defeating Cal-Baptist 6-1 before falling to UNLV 4-2 at Eller Media Stadium.
Cal-Baptist (4-3 overall) took the early lead with a first inning run as Katelyn Mangrello singled home a run. The Wildcats threatened in each of the first two innings, but the Lancers led 1-0 after two frames, leaving a runner on in the first inning and a pair of runners on in the second.
Weber State (3-5) finally broke through in a big way in the top of the third inning, scoring four times. Noelle Foster started the rally with a one-out walk and later scored as Faith Hoe singled up the middle to tie the game at 1-1.
Lauren Hoe followed her sister's single with a home run, launching a 1-1 pitch by Cal-Baptist starter Alyssa Argomaniz for a three-run shot over the right field fence to give the Wildcats a 4-1 margin.Â
Cal-Baptist loaded the bases against the Wildcats in the sixth, but Wildcat starter Kate Donaldson enduced a ground ball to end the rally.Â
In the top of the seventh, Weber State tacked on two more runs. Mia Rushton drew a leadoff walk, and Foster followed with a single to right field. Chloe Camarero picked up her first two RBI of the season, driving home Rushton and Foster to make the score 6-1.
Donaldson pitched a gem for the Wildcats, going the distance to earn her first win of the season and improve to 1-1. The junior righthander scattered seven hits without a walk and struck out eight, allowing only the single run.
In the final game of the day, the Wildcats held a 2-0 lead through four innings, but once again late runs proved costly as the Rebels (7-2) scored three times in the fifth inning and added an insurance run in the sixth to steal the victory.
The Wildcats took the lead in the first inning as Rushton reached on an error, advanced to third on a Camarero single and later scored on a passed ball with two outs.Â
Lauren Hoe continued her hot hitting in the fourth inning, taking UNLV's Charlie Masterson deep to left center for a solo shot, her second home run of the day and third of the tournament.
For the second-straight day, the fifth inning was costly for the Wildcats. On Friday, the Rebels scored four times in the fifth to break open a 1-1 game in a 5-0 win over the 'Cats. On Saturday, the tournament hosts scored three times to take a 3-2 lead. Justine Federe provided the big blow in the inning, hitting a two-run home run to right field.
The Rebels added an insurance run in the sixth and held on through a Wildcat seventh inning rally for the win. Saree-Ann Kekahuna singled to lead off the final inning for Weber State, and Abigail Sagert followed with a double to right center. Emily Ruhl then drew a walk to load the bases with no outs, but UNLV forced pinch runner Katelyn Whiting out at home on a fielders choice, got a strikeout for the second out, and ended the game ona grounder to first.
Lauren Hoe finished the day 3-for-7 at the plate with the two home runs and four RBI. Rushton picked up two hits in six at-bats on the day, while Sagert went 2-for-3 in the loss to UNLV.
The Wildcats will wrap up the tournament with a single game on Sunday as they will again face Cal-Baptist. First pitch is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. MT.
