OGDEN - Weber State football played its first home game in nearly a year and a half on Saturday. It took the Wildcats a bit to get going but they rallied from a halftime deficit and pulled out an 18-13 win over UC Davis at Stewart Stadium.
Weber State entered the week ranked second in the nation and won its ninth straight home game.
UC Davis, ranked 23rd in the country, jumped out to a 10-0 halftime lead but the Wildcats got going in the second half, outsourcing the Aggies 15-0.
Dontae McMillan capped a 75-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown with 8:49 to play in the third quarter to put the Wildcats on the board. Haze Hadley hit Logan Snyder for a two-point conversion to make it 10-8.
A few minutes later after a defensive hold, Daniel Wright Jr. scored on a 10-yard touchdown run to put the Wildcats ahead. Both teams added a field goal in the fourth quarter and the 'Cats hung on for the win.
UC Davis totaled 324 yards of total offense, compared to 247 for the Wildcats. WSU did force two Aggie turnovers.
Bronson Barron finished the day 12 of 28 passing for 140 yards. Josh Davis had 20 rushes for 71 yards. David Ames had four catches for 38 yards and Ty MacPherson had three for 60 yards.
On defense, Conner Mortensen led the way with 11 tackles, including nine solo, and 3.5 tackles for loss. Desmond Williams had 10 tackles and a forced fumble, while Eddie Heckard and Preston Smith each had interceptions.
"It was a slow start which I worried about coming off a bye week and we didn't look sharp in the first half," said WSU head coach Jay Hill. "I thought we got going on offense and defense in the third quarter against a dang good team. We have a long way to go but hopefully this just propels us onto the next one."
The Wildcats improved to 2-0 in the spring season. WSU has another bye week next week before returning to action on March 27 with another home game against Northern Arizona.
