Weber State Splits Doubleheader with Trailblazers

3/19/2021 9:22:00 PM | Softball

ST. GEORGE, Utah – The Weber State softball team split the opening doubleheader of a four-game series with Dixie State, winning the opener 14-4 ahead of a 9-7 loss on Friday at Karl Brooks Field.

Mariah Ramirez led the way in the opener, performing both at the plate and in the circle for the Wildcats. The sophomore from La Habra, Calif. went 3-for-5 on the day with a pair of home runs and 5 RBI. She also tossed five innings as the starter for WSU, earning the win while striking out six. Ramirez improved to 5-4 on the year with the win.

Ramirez got the Wildcats on the board first, launching a solo homer to center field in the second inning, and came back an inning later with a two RBI single to center, scoring Faith Hoe and Ashlyn Visser to make the score 3-0.

In the fifth inning, the Wildcats tacked on six more runs to break the game open. Noelle Foster started the scoring in the frame, driving home Visser for her first of four RBI in the game. Ramirez followed with her second long ball, going over the left field wall for a two-run shot. Katelyn Whiting and Chloe Camarero capped the inning with back-to-back doubles to push the score to 9-0.

After four scoreless innings, Dixie State finally got to Ramirez offensively in the fifth. A pair of singles set up Hannah Hughbanks, who cashed in with a 3-run home run. Mikaela Thomson added a solo home run to lead off the sixth inning, ending Ramirez's day in the circle for WSU.

The Wildcats responded with another five runs in the seventh inning. Makayla Donahoo led off with a double to left field, Mia Rushton and Camarero added RBI singles, and Foster capped the frame with a bases-clearing three-RBI double.

Kate Donaldson pitched two perfect innings in relief of Ramirez to close out the game.

In the nightcap, Donahoo drove home Foster in the top of the second inning to give Weber State a 1-0 lead, but Dixie State answered with six runs in the bottom of the inning.

The Wildcats came back with five runs in the fourth inning, their third inning of five or more runs on the day, to knot the game at 6-6. Abigail Sagert walked and Emily Ruhl doubled to open the inning for WSU. Donahoo drew a walk to load the bases and a batter later, Whiting singled to left field, scoring two. Camarero then tripled to right center, driving in two more runs, and later scored on a wild pitch.

The Wildcats scored a single run in the fifth inning to take a 7-6 lead, but the Trailblazers bounced back with three runs in the bottom of the frame to finish the scoring in the game.

Weber State moved to 8-10 on the season with the split, while Dixie State's record went to 11-11.

Foster led Weber State with four hits on the day and added four RBI, while Ramirez, Rushton, Whiting, Camarero, and Ruhl each tallied three hits on the day. Camarero and Whiting joined Foster with four RBI each on the day.

The two teams will matchup in another doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 11:00 a.m. to wrap up the four-game set.
