OGDEN, UT - Weber State women's soccer team fought a hard battle against Southern Utah on Sunday, March 28th, and fell to the Thunderbirds 0-1. The Senior Day match was held in Ogden, Utah on the Wildcat Soccer Field.
Weber State seniors were recognized for their hard work and accomplishments before the match. The seniors include: Mylee Broad, Jasmine Lotey, Cambrie Lake, Haley Thomas, and Kylie Harris.Â
Unlike any "normal" season, the Wildcats faced off against the Thunderbirds for the second time in a row, after beating them 1-0 on Friday, March 26th. Weber State came out hard in the first half, and continued to play in the team's passing style much like they did in the first matchup. The Wildcats controlled the ball well in the first half, and earned three shot opportunities to score early on, coming from Jasmine Lotey, Sadie Newsom, and Grace Youngberg.Â
Unfortunately for the Wildcats, a penalty kick was awarded to the Thunderbirds in the 34th minute of play, after WSU goalkeeper Kaytlin Bradley collided with an SUU player. Southern Utah converted on the penalty to give the Thunderbirds a 1-0 lead with less than ten minutes remaining in the half. Weber State stepped up the intensity to finish out the half, and spent most of the time in SUU territory. Rachel Twede had a good opportunity to score in the 40th minute when she punched one to the bottom right of the goal, but the attempt was saved by Southern Utah's keeper. The first period ended 0-1 for the Thunderbirds.
The Wildcats came out in the second half ready to win back the match, and did their best to get on the board. Within the first ten minutes of the second period Weber State had already taken four shots--the same amount taken in the entire first half. These shots came from Yira Yoggerst, Lauren McConnell, Haley Thomas, and Andelin Baldwin. Though the increased intensity from Weber State made it so the game was mostly played in SUU's defensive half, the Wildcats just couldn't get the ball into the back of the net. The game ended 0-1 for SUU.
"This is the first time we've played the same team on Friday and Sunday," said head coach, Craig Sanders. "We had a significant number of shots, 15 to their 4, and we don't get anything to show for it. The keeper made some saves, we hit the upright, and it's just kind of the way the game went."
Weber State had a total of 15 shots, compared to Southern Utah's four; and seven corner kicks, compared to SUU's one. It was a physical game between the in-state rivals, with a total of 24 fouls and one yellow card. The Wildcats controlled 58% of the possession.
"The girls played well and hard. SUU came into the match with a game plan, and was able to survive it. It's a tough loss when we've been playing so well this season. We played the game well enough to win by a handful of goals. It's definitely disappointing," said Sanders.
The Wildcats will head to Pocatello, Idaho for a pair of matches on April 2nd and 4th against the Idaho State Bengals.Â
