Wildcats find 2-0 win against Griffins

3/7/2021 5:29:00 PM | Women's Soccer

HERRIMAN, UT - The Weber State University women's soccer team toughed out a physical 2-0 win against the Westminster Griffins on Sunday, March 7th. The match was played in Herriman, Utah at the Zions Bank RSL Training Academy.

The Wildcats came out hard in the first half, knocking the ball around well and earning one shot and three corner kicks within the first three minutes. Weber State's Jasmine Lotey put one on the board for the 'Cats in the 15th minute with an assist from Olivia Barton. The Wildcats kept the heat on the Griffins throughout the rest of the half, finding a total of nine shots. Goalkeeper Mekell Moss made a few great saves, including one from a penalty kick, to ensure the Wildcats didn't get scored on.

Just before the end of the first half, Kinsley Napoli put her head on a cross from Yira Yoggerst that found the back of the net. This is Napoli's first game back since the fall of 2018 after suffering a knee injury at the beginning of the 2019 season. The half ended 2-0 for the Wildcats.

Westminster upped their energy in the second half, and the game got quite physical. The total foul count in the second period was 15. Weber State had a harder time knocking the ball around the Griffs due to the physicality, and the Griffs earned eight shots in the second period to the Wildcat's four. Moss continued to play well in goal along with Weber State's defense, and thwarted any Westminster attempt to score. The game ended 2-0 for the Wildcats.

Weber State soccer will open up its Big Sky Conference play next weekend, March 12th and 14th, at Northern Arizona in Flagstaff, Arizona.

Hear from Wildcat head coach, Craig Sanders on the win, and how he feels the preseason has prepared the team for conference play in the video below!
