Wildcats fall to Lumberjacks 1-0 in cold, windy battle

3/14/2021 4:58:00 PM | Women's Soccer

FLAGSTAFF, AZ - After a canceled game due to inclement weather on March 12th, the Weber State Wildcats and Northern Arizona Lumberjacks faced off in a cold and windy battle in Flagstaff, Arizona on Sunday, March 14th. The Wildcats fought tough, but were unable to find the back of the net against the Lumberjacks, and fell 1-0.

"This was a tough, physical game," said Craig Sanders, head coach. "We ended the first half 0-0 as both teams were adjusting to the difficult conditions. We started the second half very well, and were unfortunate to concede a gifted goal."

Weber State struggled to find possession early in the match, and Northern Arizona was able to keep the ball in the Wildcat's defensive half. Weber State had a few good chances to score in the first half, including a header from Taylor Scadlock that came off a cross from Cambrie Lake that went off the post. Jasmine Lotey had a good chance to put one in the back of the net close to the end of the half, but the shot unfortunately was just right and high of the goal. The half finished 0-0 for the Wildcats and Lumberjacks.

Early in the second half of play, Northern Arizona's Madison Montgomery was able to gain possession of the ball and placed a right-aimed shot into the back of the net to give the Lumberjacks a 1-0 lead. The Wildcats had to fight from behind and were able to create some good opportunities to score. Following a handball from NAU, Yira Yoggerst crossed a ball into the mix to Sadie Newsom's head. Unfortunately the attempt ended up out-of-bounds.

The wind picked up late in the second half, increasing the difficulty caused by the cold weather conditions. The Wildcats had multiple attempts to score coming from corner kicks, but couldn't find the back of the net. The game ended 1-0 for Northern Arizona.

"They defended resolutely, and although we had a number of good scoring chances, we were unable to convert. Disappointed at the 0-1 result, and determined to work hard to ensure a win next game," said Sanders.

Weber State women's soccer team will continue the spring 2021 season on March 26th and 28th at home against Southern Utah.

Go Wildcats!
