Wildcats down Thunderbirds in physical 1-0 battle

3/26/2021 7:20:00 PM | Women's Soccer

OGDEN, UT - The Weber State women's soccer team earned their first Big Sky Conference victory in a physical 1-0 battle. The Wildcats downed the Thunderbirds in 90 minutes of play with a goal in the first half.

The Wildcats came out strong in the first half, and found their rhythm early. The team had many spells where they'd knock the ball around the Thunderbirds, working their way up the field to give themselves opportunities to score. Many Weber State players found shots in the first half, including Harlee Turnbow, Cambrie Lake, Haley Thomas, and Yira Yoggerst. In the 36th minute, Yoggerst stole the ball from the Thunderbirds, beat two defenders, and slotted one right past the goalkeeper to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. Shortly after the goal, the game became quite chippy, with a player from Southern Utah getting a yellow card. Weber State continued to fight until the end of the half, and maintained the lead at the 45.

The level of intensity increased in the second half of the match from both the Wildcats and Thunderbirds. Weber State took three shots in the first five minutes of the period, coming from Jasmine Lotey, Andelin Baldwin, and Haley Thomas. The Thunderbirds had a good chance to tie the match up halfway through the half, when SUU found a header off a corner kick. The header ricocheted off the crossbar but was cleared by the Wildcat defense. There were a total of 16 fouls committed in the second half between the two in-state rivals, but Weber State held strong and denied Southern Utah any other scoring opportunities despite the physical play.

The Wildcats will play the Thunderbirds again on Sunday, March 28th at 1:00 pm at the Wildcat Soccer Field. Fans can purchase tickets for the match at WeberStateSports.com.
