Wildcats Post Season-Best Second Place at UCSB Intercollegiate

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Isaac Buerger finished second overall and all five Wildcats finished in the top-26 as Weber State posted its season-best finish of the season with a second place at the UC Santa Barbara Intercollegiate at Sandpiper Golf Club.
As a team, the Wildcats posted rounds of 280, 290 and 285 for a 9-under-par total of 855. Their final round 3-under 285 led the field as the Wildcats made a run at 36-hole leader Boise State, but they came up two shots shy of the Broncos, who closed with an even-par 288 to hold onto the lead to win the team title at 853. Boise State built their 5-shot lead with rounds of 277 and 288 on Monday. Cal Baptist finished third, nine shots back of Weber State at 864.
"I couldn't be prouder of our effort this week," said head coach Scott Erling. "We came up a couple of shots short, but all of our guys battled to the end and showed a lot of grit."
Buerger opened the tournament with seven birdies in a bogey-free 65 to grab the 18-hole lead in the tournament. He cooled off a bit in the afternoon round, carding four birdies against four bogeys for an even-par 72, but held onto the lead after 36 holes, two shots ahead of Boise State's Max Charles. On Tuesday, Buerger made three more birdies in a 1-under-par 71, but slipped to second as Charles made four birdies and an eagle to snatch away the individual medalist title with a closing round 5-under-par 67.
Charles posted rounds of 69-70-67 for a 10-under-par total of 206, while Buerger finished two back at 208. Blake Brothers of CSU-Northridge and Boise State's Hugo Townsend finished tied for third at 211.
Hayden Banz also opened the tournament on Monday with a great round, carding six birdies in a 4-under-par 68. He then added another four birdies in an even-par 72 in the afternoon before adding two birdies in a final round 74 to finish tied for 7th at 2-under-par 214.
Reese Fisher shot a tournament total of 1-under-par 215 to finish in 11th place, giving the 'Cats three players in the top 11. Fisher posted five birdies on Monday across rounds of 73 and 72, and added another three birdies to close with a 2-under-par 70.
Oliver Gothe recorded 10 birdies over rounds of 74, 74 and 73 to shoot a 5-over-par total of 221 to tie for 22nd place, while Brody Childs carded 12 birdies, including seven in a final round 1-under-par 71. Childs opened with rounds of 75 and 76 and finished in a tie for 26th place at 222.
Buerger tied for the team lead in par-3 scoring at even-par, and led the field by five shots in par-4 scoring at 7-under-par. His 14 birdies led the field, while Childs and Banz tied for the fifth-most birdies with 12 each, and Fisher's 40 pars led the field.
The tournament was the final outing for the Wildcats ahead of the Big Sky Conference Championships, which will be played April 25-27 at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nev.
