Wildcats Take Doubleheader from Northern Colorado

4/16/2021 11:10:00 PM | Softball

OGDEN, Utah – The Weber State softball team continued its great form of play on Friday with a doubleheader sweep of Northern Colorado to remain undefeated atop the Big Sky Conference standings.

The Wildcats opened the day with a 10-2 run-rule victory, and then completed the sweep with a 9-3 win in the nightcap. With the two wins, the Wildcats improved to 18-12 overall and 8-0 in Big Sky play.

After a pair of scoreless frames, Northern Colorado jumped on the board first as reigning Big Sky Player of the Week Mady Young took an 0-1 pitch from Mariah Ramirez over the left field fence for a two-run home run in the top of the third.

The Wildcats immediately responded in the bottom of the inning as Chloe Camarero repaid the Bears, launching a two-run shot of her own off of UNC starter Lainey Hanehan.

Weber State added another three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Emily Ruhl started the rally with her first career home run for the Wildcats, a solo blast to left field, and Camarero finished things off, ripping a double to the right-center field gap to score Katelyn Whiting and Mia Rushton.

The Wildcats put the game away in the fifth inning, scoring five times to put the run-rule into effect. Lauren Hoe and Ruhl notched RBI singles to run the score to 7-2 and after Whiting drew a bases-loaded walk, Camarero struck again, this time with a two-run single to end the game.

Camarero wrapped up the game with three hits in four at-bats and added six RBI, while Ruhl finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBI. Mariah Ramirez went the distance for the 'Cats in the circle, allowing the pair of runs on six hits and two walks, while striking out two to improve to 9-4 on the year.

In game two, the Wildcats jumped out early, scoring twice in the opening frame. Whiting doubled home Rushton to open the scoring and later scored herself on a wild pitch from UNC starter Erin Caviness.

Weber State scored five more times in the third inning to run the score to 7-0. Camarero's RBI single ran the score to 4-0, and three batters later Lauren Hoe took the first pitch she saw from Caviness deep to center field for a two-out, three-run home run.

In the fourth inning, the Bears scored three times on one hit and no walks as the Wildcat defense had an uncharacteristically poor defensive frame. WSU committed five errors in the inning, four of which came on consecutive plays.

The Wildcats composed themselves and added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as Lauren Hoe followed a Noelle Foster walk with her second home run of the game.

Kate Donaldson made it back-to-back complete game efforts from the Wildcat pitching staff, scattering seven hits and walking only one over seven innings. Donaldson allowed three runs, none of which were earned, and struck out six to improve to 6-4 on the season.

Rushton, Whiting and Lauren Hoe each tallied two hits for the Wildcats in the game, while Hoe drove in a team-high five RBI.

On the day, Camarero went 4-for-7 and led the Wildcats with seven RBI, while Lauren Hoe went 3-for-4 with a pair of walks and six RBI. Whiting went 3-for-5 with three walks and four runs scored, while Ruhl finished the day 3-for-6 and Rushton notched three hits in seven at-bats and scored four times. Rushton picked up a hit in both games, keeping her consecutive hits streak alive and extending it to 19-straight games. Ashlyn Visser ran a hitting streak of her own to 10 games with a single in the opening game, but saw it come to an end with a hitless second game.

The Wildcats will face Northern Colorado, who dropped to 9-21 overall and 5-6 in Big Sky play, in the series finale on Saturday at Wildcat Softball Field with the first pitch coming at Noon.
