Wildcats Wrap Regular Season With Win Over Montana

5/8/2021 10:02:00 PM | Softball

MISSOULA, Mont. – Weber State concluded the Big Sky regular season schedule on Saturday with an 11-5 win over the University of Montana at Grizzly Softball Field, finishing the three-game series with a pair of wins.

Montana looked to take the early advantage, scoring four times in the opening inning. Maygen McGrath put the Grizzlies on the board to open the scoring with the big damage in the inning, hitting a two-run home run to right center. The Grizzlies followed with a run scoring single and a sacrifice fly and led 4-0 after one complete frame.

Montana held their 4-0 lead until the top of the third, when the Wildcats exploded for five runs. Katelyn Whiting drove home the first run on a bases-loaded fielder's choice, and Chloe Camarero, Ashlyn Visser and Faith Hoe followed with RBI singles, with Hoe driving in a pair on her hit to cap the scoring rally.

Kylie Becker drove home a run for Montana with a game-tying RBI single in the fourth inning, but the Wildcats responded with six runs over the next three innings to put the game away.

In the fifth, Mariah Ramirez doubled down the left field line to drive home Faith Hoe and Whiting to give Weber State the lead for good.

Noelle Foster led off the sixth inning with a solo home run, her third of the season. Following a Makayla Donahoo double, Whiting hit the team's second home run of the inning, a two-run shot over the left field fence.

Whiting added her fourth RBI of the game in the top of the seventh, driving home Lauren Hoe on a groundout to second. Whiting finished the game 2-for-5 with three runs scored and the four RBI.

Foster went 4-for-4 in the game for her second four-hit game of the season, and scored twice. Faith Hoe went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI, while Ramirez also drove in two.

Amanda Sink came on in relief of Kate Donaldson in the second inning and tossed six great innings of work, allowing only a single run on five hits, while striking out two. Sink earned the win for the second-straight game in the series, and improved to 5-2 on the season.

The Wildcats will now look forward to the Big Sky Conference tournament, which they will host May 13-15 in Ogden. The Wildcats, as the No. 1 seed, will play the winner of No. 4 seeded-Northern Colorado and No. 5-seeded Portland State on Thursday afternoon for their opening game.
