Wildcats Drop Home Opener To UVU In Physical Contest
8/26/2021 10:30:00 PM | Women's Soccer
On Thursday night, the Weber State Wildcats suffered their first loss of the season in their home opener against the Utah Valley Wolverines.Â
Coming into the match, the Wildcats and Wolverines both were riding waves of momentum. The Wildcats had left Kansas State stunned by dominating them on their field while UVU was busy knocking off both Arizona and Northern Arizona.Â
In the battle between WSU and UVU, those two waves collided as both teams drowned in a sea of physicality, chippiness, and grit - but in the end, the Wolverines were able to stay afloat and get the better of the Wildcats.Â
The scoring began when Utah Valley found the back of the net 11 minutes into the game which was the lone score of the first half. The Wildcats were buckling down on defense but UVU still was able to find scoring chances and they eventually tacked on two more goals in the 64th and 73rd minutes of the match.Â
As the clock began to wind down and WSU's comeback hopes began to dwindle, they stayed engaged and continued to play with the same edge that was seen in their season-opening victory over K-State. While the scoreboard wasn't what they had hoped for, Weber State didn't hang their heads and showed what was a testament to their character which is a will to fight.Â
Weber State now holds a record of 1-1 but their schedule has granted them an opportunity to move on from this loss rather quickly as a date looms with the Utah State Aggies, a game that will take place on the Wildcat Soccer Field at 7:00 P.M. on Sunday and will be broadcasted on ESPN+.Â
