Wildcats Set to Battle UVU In Tonight's Home Opener

8/26/2021 1:29:00 PM | Women's Soccer

Tonight, the (1-0) Weber State Wildcats will kick off their three-game home-stand in their season opener against the (2-0) Utah Valley Wolverines.

This matchup will be the first between the two teams since 2018 where the Wildcats beat UVU 1-0. WSU not only won that match-up but improved their series lead over their foes from Orem in the process. Weber State has a record of 8-2 all-time against Utah Valley and has won the last four games.

Despite what history has had to say about this match-up, this will be no easy task for the Wildcats. Last season, UVU won the WAC conference title and posted a record of 13-5-4. They also were able to defeat the Wildcats in an exhibition match earlier this year on Jan. 16 but those games don't go into any record books. They currently are coming off of wins over both Arizona where they won 2-0, and Northern Arizona where they won 2-1 in overtime.

Meanwhile, Weber State is coming off an electric 2-0 win over the Kansas State Wildcats of the Big 12 conference. WSU ignored K-State's sell-out crowd and executed throughout the night until the final horn blared.

In that game, WSU saw scores from both Lauren McConnell who was assisted by Brynlee Meyerhoffer, and Morgan Furmaniak who was assisted by Amy Kenney. Kaytlin Bradley finished the night with seven saves and was named the Big Sky Defensive Player of the Week.

After going 4-3-3 in his inaugural season during the spring, Head Coach Craig Sanders is back and kicked his second season off with a bang with that 2-0 victory in Manhattan, KS.

Also taking the field for the Wildcats this season will be a bunch of goal scorers from the previous season in Taylor Slack, Andelin Baldwin, Yira Yoggerst, Kinsley Napoli, Harlee Turnbow, and Hailey Price as they each found the back of the net once throughout the spring.

Along with them are a couple of award winners from the previous season - Sadie Newsom was named to the Big Sky's All-Conference Second Team along with Price who was not only a second-teamer but also was the conference's newcomer of the year.

Last season was a breakout one for Mekell Moss who allowed just a single goal in five games. She also notched 16 saves which gave her a save percentage of .941%

Tonight, the Wildcats will look to build off their momentum from opening night against a UVU squad that will undoubtedly be itching for a fight.

This match will be available on ESPN+ at 7 P.M. and will take place on the Wildcat Soccer Field.
