Wildcats Travel To Nevada For Battle Against Rebels

9/10/2021 9:31:00 AM | Women's Soccer

After a three-game homestead at the Wildcat Soccer Field, Weber State is back on the road for a battle against the UNLV Rebels in Las Vegas, NV.

This matchup between WSU and UNLV will be the first one since 2010 where the Rebels won 1-0 on their home field. The teams have met four times throughout history and the Wildcats have only been able to win one of those contests. That victory for WSU came in the fall of 1998, outside of that year the teams have met in 1999, 2002 and of course the latest meeting back in 2010.

The Wildcats are coming off a 1-0 victory over Dixie State in the first ever meeting between the two programs. They currently sit with a 2-2 record and are 1-0 in their lone battle on the road. On the other side, UNLV will open the game with a record of 4-2 with two of their wins coming against Big Sky members Southern Utah and UC Davis but one of their losses dealt by the hands of Dixie State.

The Wildcats lone goal scorers of the season are Morgan Furmaniak (2) and Lauren McConnell (1). Furmaniak and McConnell both scored in WSU's season-opening defeat of Kansas State off of assists from Amy Kenney and Brynlee Meyerhoffer, Furmaniak then scored again against Dixie State. In that K-State game, Kaytlin Bradley finished the night with seven saves and was named the Big Sky Defensive Player of the Week.

In WSU's most recent match, Mekell Moss pitched a shutout of her own while also recording three saves.

This will be the fifth game in his second season as head coach for Craig Sanders. Last season he had a record of 4-3-3 in his inaugural spring season.

Also taking the field for the Wildcats will be a handful of goal scorers from the previous season in Taylor Slack, Andelin Baldwin, Yira Yoggerst, Kinsley Napoli, Harlee Turnbow, and Hailey Price as they each found the back of the net once throughout the spring.

Along with them are a couple of award winners from the previous season - Sadie Newsom was named to the Big Sky's All-Conference Second Team along with Price who was not only a second-teamer but also was the conference's newcomer of the year.

This will be the first match this season that isn't streamed on ESPN+ but live stats will be made available as kickoff time nears.
