Wildcats Back On Track After 1-0 Victory Over Dixie State
9/5/2021 4:36:00 PM | Women's Soccer
The Weber State Wildcats broke out of their two-game slump with a decisive 1-0 victory over the Dixie State Trailblazers.Â
The theme for the past two games for Weber State had been a lack of scoring opportunities. They were playing hard, they were defending and they were gritty but ultimately their offensive woes were causing their defense to handle far too much pressure, but against Dixie State - WSU was able to break out of their funk.Â
Throughout Sunday afternoons match, Weber State fired off 23 shots with 16 of them being on goal and one of them landing in the back of the net in the 27th minute by way of a header from freshmen forward Morgan Furmaniak. If Furmaniak scoring off a header seems familiar, it's because she did the same thing in their season-opening victory over Kansas State.Â
In the opening half, the Trailblazers only were able to get off one shot which junior goalkeeper Mekell Moss left alone as it sailed out of bounds. The Wildcats had 11 shots up to that point with 10 of them being on goal.
When WSU came running out of the locker room for the second half, they continued their assertive, decisive, and aggressive approach on the offensive end and while they were unable to put another goal in the net, they remained in control of the match.Â
As the game began to tick towards an end, each minute left the clock slower than the previous as Dixie State finally began to attack the Wildcat goal box. There were a few nearly nightmarish chances but Mekell Moss was able to save three shots and secure her fourth career shutout as the Wildcats blanked the Trailblazers 1-0.Â
Suddenly, Weber State is back cruising and behind them follows a purple wave of momentum that they'll look to ride as they attempt to navigate past more non-conference opponents. This afternoon's battle against DSU was much cleaner in all aspects of the game and they looked to have connected dots and create chances that had been absent. WSU turned losses into lessons and in turn, they end the day victorious.Â
The next time the (2-2) Wildcats will be in action is on Friday, Sep. 10 against the (4-1)Â UNLV Rebels and it'll be the first time this season that the Wildcats will not play on ESPN+.
