LAS CRUCES, NM – The Weber State men's golf team shot a 5-under par 279 in the final round of the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate on Tuesday to move three spots up the leaderboard, wrapping up the event–and the 2022 fall season–with a second place finish.
The Wildcats opened the tournament on Monday with an even-par 284 and were in third place after 18 holes, but a second round 289 dropped the team into fifth place heading into Tuesday's final round. Four of the five Wildcats shot under par on the final day, led by Hayden Banz, who posted a 2-under par 69. Cameron Gray, Isaac Buerger and Brendan Thomas each carded a 1-under par 70 on the day.
Tournament-host New Mexico State cruised to the team title on their home course, the par 71, 7,242-yard University Golf Course, shooting rounds of 279, 271 and 282 for a 20-under par total of 832 and a 20-shot win over the Wildcats and Seattle University, who tied for second at 852.
Gray's final round 70 was his third consecutive for the tournament, and he closed out the event with a team-best fifth place overall at 3-under par 210. Gray opened the tournament with back-to-back birdies and carded birdies on three of his first five holes to get off to a fast start. After falling back to even after a trio of bogeys, Gray birdied his 17th hole of the round to get back in red figures. In Monday's second round, Gray once again carded four birdies against three bogeys for his second-straight 70 of the tournament. In Tuesday's final round, he posted a more consistent round, offsetting a single bogey with a pair of birdies as he ran his birdie total to 10 for the event.
Buerger backed up Gray's effort with rounds of 70, 73 and 70 to tie for 11th place at even-par 213, giving Weber State two players inside the top-11. He posted three birdies in his opening round, added another three birdies and an eagle in a roller coaster second round, and finished off the tournament with three more birdies in the final round.
Banz earned a top-25 spot, posting rounds of 72, 75 and 69 for a 3-over par total of 216 to tie for 21st place. He led the team in birdies over the 54 hole event, carding 13 total. He posted five in his opening round 72 and added another three in Monday's second round. On Tuesday, he started slow with a bogey and a double over his first three holes, but caught fire on his seventh hole of the day, going on to birdie five of his next seven holes to get to 2-under.
Gunnar Knutson tied for 28th place overall, recording back-to-back rounds of 72 on Monday ahead of a 74 on Tuesday to finish at 5-over par 218, while Thomas tied for 31st place with rounds of 75, 74 and 70 for a 6-over par 219. Knutson posted eight birdies on the event, while Thomas recorded five birdies.
Garrison Smith of New Mexico State shot rounds of 67, 66 and 65 for a 15-under par total of 198 to run away with the individual medalist title. Nathan McCulloch of Texas A&M Commerce posted an impressive 8-under par 205, but still finished seven shots behind Smith. Texas Tech's Gustav Andersson and Aidan Thomas of New Mexico State each shot 209 to tie for third, one shot ahead of Weber State's Gray.
