Wildcats Jump to Second Place Finish in Spring Opener

ST. GEORGE, Utah – The Weber State men's golf team opened up the 2023 fall season with an impressive finish, jumping four spots over the last two rounds to finish in second place at the Southern Utah-hosted Pizza Hut Pat Hicks Invitational at Sunbrook Golf Club.

The Wildcats kicked off the tournament on Friday in sixth place following an opening round 292, but got things going in round two. On a tough scoring day in Saturday's second round, WSU posted the third-best score of the day with an even-par 288 and moved three spots into third place. On Sunday, the 'Cats moved up another spot with a 6-under par 282 to finish off the tournament with a 2-under par total of 862.

Utah Valley shot an impressive 11-under par 272 in the final round to earn the team title at 22-under with a total of 842. Utah State led the first two rounds, but dropped to third at 863 on Sunday. 

Weber State was led by Isaac Buerger, who shot rounds of 74, 71 and 69 for a 2-under par 214 to tie for 8th place overall. Buerger carded 14 birdies for the tournament, including six in his second round 71 and five in his final round 69.

Cameron Gray led the Wildcats final day, shooting a 4-under par 68 to move into a tie for 14th place at even par 216 after opening with rounds of 72 and 76. Gray posted 12 birdies for the event, with five against a single bogey in his final round 68.

Gunnar Knutson also tied for 14th place at even-par 216 after rounds of 70, 74 and 72, recording eight birdies over the three rounds.

Hayden Banz shot rounds of 76, 72 and 73 for a 5-over par 221 to finish in a tie for 26th place, while Brendan Thomas tied for 35th at 8-over par 224 with rounds of 77, 71 and 76.

Ty Anderson and Oliver Gothe competed as individuals for the Wildcats, with Anderson finishing in a tie for 33rd at 7-over par 223 and Gothe tied for 49th at 14-over 230.

Utah Valley's Brady McKinlay earned individual medalist honors after rounds of 68, 74 and 65 for a 9-under par 207. Tarleton State's Jack Anderson finished second, one shot back at 208.
