Jurupa Valley, Calif. – The Weber State men's golf team shot three-consecutive rounds of 290 in the Joust at Goose Creek tournament to earn the team championship at Goose Creek Golf Club on Tuesday with an 18-over par total of 870.
"I couldn't be prouder of the effort from everyone on our team in some tough conditions," said WSU head coach Scott Erling. "Competing this early in the spring is always a challenge because we haven't been outside much, but the guys fought and got it done today. I'm excited to see if we can build off of this momentum for the rest of the spring."
The Wildcats entered the final round in second place, but quickly surged into the lead, overcoming a two-shot deficit to 36-hole leader Cal Baptist with some early birdies. WSU increased its lead throughout the day as Morehead State and Cal Baptist was unable to maintain the pace set by the Wildcats, who shot the second-best score of the day.
Brody Childs opened the tournament with a 4-over par 75, but came back with a second round 1-under 70 and a final round 2-under par 69 to earn individual medalist honors with a 1-over par total of 214. Childs carded 14 birdies and an eagle in the tournament, including six birdies in the final round.
"I'm so happy for Brody," said Erling. "He has worked very hard to turn himself into a really solid player and has become an important part of our team."
Reese Fisher finished one shot back of Childs in a three-way tie for second place at 215 after rounds of 69, 73 and 73. Fisher posted eight birdies and added an eagle during the event.
Hunter Howe carded eight birdies and shot rounds of 74, 73 and 72 to finish in a tie for 16th place at 6-over par 219. Hayden Banz (73-74-76) tied for 28th with a 10-over par total of 223, while Isaac Buerger (74-75-80) finished tied for 58th at 229.
The team championship is the first for the Weber State men's golf program since Sep. 16, 2014 when they claimed the title at the UNO Invitational, while Childs' medalist honors are the first for the Wildcats since Devon Purser claimed medalist honors at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic on April 7, 2015.
Morehead State finished in second place, 10 shots back of the Wildcats at 880, while Cal Baptist finished third at 881. Cal State Fullerton matched Weber State's final round 290 to move up into fourth place with a total of 882.
The Wildcats also came in atop the tournament's All-Five standings, in which all five scores from each team's lineup counts in each round as opposed to the official top-4 scores from each round. The Wildcats totaled 1,100 in the All-Five scoring, coming in 14 shots ahead of second place Morehead State.
Joe Muschong of Morehead State and Ryan Hodgins of Simon Fraser joined Fisher in the tie for second place on the individual leaderboard.
The Wildcats will be back in action on Mar. 7-8 at the Colin Montgomerie Invitational, hosted by Houston Baptist at Augusta Pines Golf Club in Spring, Tex.
