Wildcats Back On Track With 73-65 Win Over Portland State

2/23/2022 8:26:00 PM | Women's Basketball

'Cats with 4 players in double figures as they downed the Vikings

Ogden, UT - The Weber State women's basketball team battled back and forth ending the first quarter tied at 18. However, going forward the 'Cats never trailed in a 73-65 win over Portland State at the Dee Events Center on Wednesday night. The 'Cats improved to 10-17 overall and 6-12 in the Big Sky Conference.

How it Happened:
The Wildcats and the Vikings spent the entire first quarter trading blows, with neither team able to gain any advantage. Jadyn Matthews started the game strong with 7 points in the first quarter. The 'Cats withstood some hot shooting by the Vikings to end the quarter tied at 18.

The game was won by the Wildcats in the second quarter. Tight marking defense and 70% shooting propelled the Wildcats to a double-digit lead. The Wildcats were able to hold the Vikings scoreless for nearly 6 minutes in the quarter and went on a 14-0 run to end the half up by 9 at 39-30. The Wildcats withstood some more hot shooting by the Vikings in the third quarter and were able to extend their lead to 10 points heading into the 4th.

Unfortunately, nothing comes easy for these 'Cats. Trailing by 10, the Vikings started shooting exclusively from behind the arc, and were able to make up ground on the Wildcats. A 3-pointer by the Vikings' Jada Lewis tied the game at 63 with just 2:15 remaining in the game, but the 'Cats kept their cool down the stretch and escaped with the 8 point victory.

Numbers to Know:
Weber State had 4 players in double digits against the Vikings. WSU was guided by Daryn Hickok with 18 points and 7 rebounds. Kori Pentzer finished with 15 points, 4 rebounds, Emma Torbert with 13 points, 5 rebounds, and Jadyn Matthews had 12 points, 5 rebounds. The Wildcat bench came up big in this game. All told, 6 players came in off the bench and all provided solid minutes in this one. Ava Williams led those off the bench with 6 points, 4 rebounds and 2 steals in 16 minutes.

Up Next:
With only two games left in the season, the Wildcats are up against Northern Arizona Saturday, Feb 26 at 1 p.m. to try and improve their standings before the Big Sky Tournament. Two Wildcat Seniors, Kori Pentzer and Aloma Solovi will play their final home game in the Purple Palace.
