The Weber State Wildcats men and women's track and field team had strong showings at the 2022 Big Sky Indoor Championships held at Montana State University – Bozeman this week with several All-Big Sky honors and two Big Sky Champions. Both teams were able to earn top-5 finishes for the meet.

All-Conference Honors

Starting with the Big Sky Championship Co-Most Valuable Athlete performance from Billie Hatch who set the Big Sky Championship meet record in the 5000m with a time of 16:31.63 to land the top spot in the event. She followed her strong performance in the 5k with another victory in the 3000m with a time of 9:36.01.

Caleb Whitney put in a winning performance for the Men's Heptathlon with a score of 5202 taking first place in five of seven events and first in both the long jump and the 60m hurdles. Hatch and Whitney both earned All-Conference honors with their victories

Other All-Conference performances came from Jed Smith who finished second in the Heptathlon after posting number one finishes in the pole vault and the 1000m run during the competition. Lachlan Burns took third in the pole vault with a mark of 16' 3.25" just missing his attempts at 16' 7". Kate Sorensen placed third in the 400m dash with a time of 55.80, Sorensen was unable to compete in the 60m hurdles where she would have likely performed well because of a hamstring injury. Coach Paul Pilkington believes she would have finished high in the hurdles and higher in the 400m if she had been at full strength. The rest of the athletes that earned the All-Conference honors are from the men's Distance Medley Relay team consisting of Peter Visser, Conner Draper, Bronson Winter, and Tracen Warnick who placed third overall in the competition.

Women

Emily Barnes-Sterzer broke her own school record in the pentathlon with a score of 3700 which earned her a fourth-place finish for the event. She placed first in the 800 and missed out on third place by just two points. Barnes-Sterzer had to battle through some discomfort and injuries throughout the meet according to Coach Paul Pilkington

Other high performers in the meet include Jasmine Devers in the 200m dash with an eighth-place finish, Devers ran a PR time in the preliminary heats with a time of 25.29. Cidnee Davies-Bohn had a fifth-place finish in the 60m hurdles. Cheyenne Leatham earned fifth place in the mile. Summer Allen had a fifth-place finish in the 5000m and a sixth-place finish in the 3000m. Rylie Lusk also performed well in the 5k with a PR time of 17:08.20, and 3k finishing seventh in both events.

In field events Kapua Pulotu placed fifth in the shot put, Lia Katoa had a personal best in the shot put by nearly three inches, and Marissa Schmidt took eighth in the weight throw.

Men

"Tracen Warnick did a stellar job as our anchor leg in the DMR with 4:06.1 for 1600m and cane back today with 4:06 in the mile - both times Convert to sub 4 minute miles" said Coach Corbin Talley. Cyrus Rindlisbacher had a fourth-place finish in the 60m hurdles in a close race after timing issues caused the men to re-run the final, and Rindlisbacher took sixth in the 400m dash and set a PR in his preliminary heat with 49.14.

Bronson Winter fell during the 800m race and fought hard to make it back into the pack but had to settle for a seventh-place finish. Coach Talley said of the event, "Bronson was in great position in the 800 final - just off the shoulder of the leader at 250m. He got pushed and then tripped up and went down. He still got up and gave his best effort. The runner who pushed Bronson was disqualified, so Bronson received the 7th place, but I believe had a shot at top 3 had he not gone down." Several distance runners had top-ten finishes for the 3000m and 5000m runs. Christian Allen placed seventh in the 3k with a PR time of 8:22.52 and earned a ninth-place finish in the 5k. Dallin Leatham also had solid placement in the 3k with a PR time of 8:23.61 and the 5k with an eighth place and sixth-place finish respectively. Peter Visser had a ninth-place finish in the 3k and a PR time of 8:25.35, and Logan Anderson finished tenth in the 5k and twelfth in the 3k with a PR time of 8:31.35. Jacob Stone set a PR in the 3k with a time of 8:39.95 to round out top performers on the track. Coach Talley added that, "it's the first time in team history that 3 guys have dipped under 8:10 (converted times) in the same meet for the 3k.

For men's field athletes Anthony Garcia finished eighth in the high jump, Xakai Harry placed fifth in the long jump despite an illness that he had to fight through, and Parker Sagers and Jed Smith tied for sixth in the pole vault.

Johnie Talamantes earned a PR with an eighth-place finish in the Heptathlon with a score of 4493.

Coach Talley said of the team finish that "the 4th place finish was our best since 2013. The guys fought hard for every point and I was proud of their teamwork and efforts. We had a number of very gutsy performances. Overall, there was a lot of heart and a lot of tough performances."

Coach Pilkington emphasized the amount of heart shown by the women's team that had several athletes either out or limited due to injuries that probably would have given them more points in the meet and would have brought them a higher team finish as they were only a few points from the third-place spot.
