SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Weber State softball opened it's final out of conference tournament on Thursday with a 9-1 loss to the preseason Mountain West Conference favorite San Diego Aztecs.
It was a rough night from the opening pitch for the Wildcats. SDSU was able to tally four runs in the bottom of the first inning and Weber State couldn't catch up after that.
Neither team scored again until the top of the fifth inning when the Wildcats manufactured a run in a crazy fashion. McKell McCuistion was hit by a pitch to get a runner on base, and Aliya Harmon came in as a pinch runner. Harmon advanced to second on a wild pitch, then to third on another wild pitch. When a Wildcat batter struck out and the catch couldn't corral the third strike, Harmon came charging home to get the Cats on the board.
The Aztecs answered with two more runs in the bottom of the inning to extend their lead to 6-1, and then chalked up three more runs in the sixth to close the game out.
The loss drops Weber State to 17-5 on the year and gives the Aztecs a two-game winning streak over the Wildcats. Mariah Ramirez started the game in the circle for the Cats and was the pitcher of record, dropping her record to 6-5 for the season.
Up next: Weber State will have a chance to exact revenge on SDSU on Friday afternoon at 1:00 PM MT. Following the bout with the Aztecs, WSU will square off for a game against CSUN. Weber State last played the Matadors in 2020 and owns a 6-4 record all-time over CSUN. The Wildcats have won three of the last four games over Northridge.
