WSU finishes the tournament with a 3-2 record
FULLERTON, Calif. – The Weber State softball team finished the Judi Garman Classic on Sunday afternoon with an 8-5 defeat from the bats of Cal State Fullerton, the tournament's host.
It was in the top of the second inning when the Wildcats scored the game's initial runs. Following a Faith Hoe walk, superstar Arissa Henderson stepped into the batter's box and annihilated the ball for a two-run home run, her second of the season. WSU went up 2-0, and extended its lead by a run when Lauren Hoe came sprinting around third following a Makayla Donahoo single.
The Wildcats put another run on the board in the following inning when McKell McCuistion went yard for her third dinger of the season, and Weber State led the game 4-0.
The bottom of the fifth is when the tide started turning in favor of the Titans. Henderson, who had been masterful through 4.1 innings, had a bases loaded jam and was pulled out of the game after throwing around three hundred pitches in a three-day span.
The following batter was hit by a pitch to score Fullerton's first run of the game, but the Cats got two consecutive outs to end the Titan threat in the fifth.
After going scoreless in the sixth inning, and after a flurry of pitching changes, Fullerton's bats came to life and put on an inning for the ages. A seven-run sixth flipped the script and put the Titans on top 8-4 heading to the top of the seventh.
Donahoo walked to start the top of the seventh, then Fullerton recorded two consecutive outs. A Chloe Camarero single put two runners on with two outs, and Faith Hoe hit a double into the Titan outfield that scored Donahoo. A Henderson walk loaded the bases and the go-ahead run came to the plate, but the Wildcats weren't able to capitalize as the third out was recorded at third base, and Fullerton completed an improbable late-inning comeback.
Weber State's loss puts the Cats at 16-4 on the season and capped off a weekend in which WSU went 3-2 against some of the toughest competition it will see this season.
It's a quick turnaround for Weber State who will be spending its spring break in California. The Cats will hit the diamond again on Tuesday in a game against California Baptist. The game can be watched on ESPN+ at 7:00 PM MT. Weber State will be staying in California throughout next weekend for a tournament in San Diego.
