The Weber State Wildcat softball team eeked out a 1-0 victory over California Baptist in a pitcher's duel for the ages on Tuesday night.
The game in Riverside, California was all about dominance in the circle. With each team starting one of their aces, hits and runs were destined to be few and far between.
After going hitless in the top of the first inning, Arissa Henderson and the Wildcats took to the field. After allowing a single up the middle to the first batter of the game, Henderson, the defending Big Sky Conference Pitcher of the Week, was orchestrated another masterful pitching performance that Wildcat fans are starting to become accustomed to.
The Wildcats recorded outs on the next three batters to end the inning.
In the top of the second, the Cats got a runner on with a leadoff walk from Faith Hoe but were unable to bring her home.
The starting pitchers exchanged strike after strike and only allowed a combined two base runners until the top of the seventh inning.
With the score knotted up at zero and the Wildcats still hitless for the game, it was Faith Hoe who served as the catalyst for the Cats. She punched a single into the outfield and was moved to second on another single from Henderson.
With some savvy, strategic hitting and offense from the Wildcats, Hoe stole third and put the Cats within striking position for the first time in the game. With McKell McCuistion at the plate, she sent a high, deep fly ball into the outfield that was far enough back to score Hoe from third and give WSU a 1-0 lead heading to the bottom of the seventh.
The Lancers, down to their last chance, couldn't muster anything against a dealing Henderson.
A pair of ground outs and a strike out from CBU's three, four, and five hitters, gave Henderson another three-up-three-down inning, her fifth of the game, and gave the Wildcats the win to improve their record to 17-4 on the season. Henderson's personal record improved to 6-0, as she went the distance in a one-hit, seven-strikeout shutout.
In Henderson's last five starts, she has thrown 30.1 innings, thrown three complete games, allowed two runs on 12 hits, and thrown 37 strikeouts.
"Arissa pitched a heck of a game," Mary Kay Amicone said of the Pitcher of the Week. Her praise extended to the team play in the top of the seventh. "Clutch sacrifice fly from McKell, and Faith getting on base was clutch. It was a lot of the little things at the end that helped us win.
Weber State will be back in action on Thursday against San Diego State to open its final tournament of this extended road trip to California. The time of the game has been changed to 6:00 PM MT and can be viewed on Youtube.
