Wildcat Softball Wins Big, Advances to Championship Round
5/12/2022 10:09:00 PM | Softball
OGDEN, Utah – The numbers one and two teams met in a Big Sky Conference tournament, and the Weber State Wildcats reigned victorious over the Sacramento State Hornets with a 9-0 victory in five innings.
First off, Mariah Ramirez was unbelievable. More on Mo later.
The Wildcats got on the board to open the game's scoring in the bottom of the second inning. Katelyn Whiting stepped up to the plate with runners on second and third and she squared for a bunt. She placed it perfectly down the line, was safe at first on an obstruction call, and scored the runner from third. The 'Cats took a 1-0 lead, and Makayla Donahoo came up and hit a sac fly to the outfield to plate the runner from third, and WSU took its 2-0 lead to the third inning.
Leading off the third inning was the number one hitter, Faith Hoe. She quickly added to the WSU lead by blasting a solo shot over the wall at Wildcat Softball Field. Arissa Henderson followed that up with a double to the outfield and was brought in by another double from Wildcat legend Chloe Camarero. Weber State took a 4-0 lead.
McKell McCuistion moved Camarero to third on a single, and on the third Wildcat double of the inning Lauren Hoe drove in a run, moved McCuiston to third, and forced the Hornets to make a pitching change. Emily Ruhl drove in a run on a ground out to make it 6-0, and Hoe scampered to third. Whiting followed that with a single to drive Hoe in and went on to advance to second base. With two runners on base, Whiting was driven on a - you guessed it - double from Mia Rushton. Faith Hoe, batting for the second time in the inning, smacked a sac fly to the outfield to bring in one more runner and finish off Weber State's scoring at nine runs.
Back to Ramirez.
To start the semifinal, Mo gave up a double and a single to the first two Hornets she faced.
She wouldn't allow a baserunner for the rest of the game.
In a five-inning game, Ramirez fanned nine Hornets, including a stretch of five in a row, and didn't allow a single walk for the entirety of the game.
Vintage.
The Wildcats completed the five-inning run-rule victory by shutting out Sacramento State.
The win improves Weber State's record to 37-10 (13-1) for the season.

QUOTABLES
"Well, we just tried to hit as a team. I think we had a couple of really good at bats today and it showed on the scoreboard. Playing this Saturday means everything to us. It's been our goal since day one. We've worked every single day. I think this team was meant to be here." – KC Whiting
"I was just keeping the ball low, moving it, keeping composure and being confident in myself was important. It means everything to us to be playing this Saturday. This is exactly what we were looking forward to. We're ready to play and ready to go out and do our thing. Having this depth is so crucial. As a team we all work together, we stay together, and we all win together." – Mo Ramirez
"It was a team effort, and we found a lot of ways to advance on the base paths. It is pass the bat mentality. Mo was fantastic. It was an amazing performance, and we knew that she had that mindset. That's the great thing about our pitching staff: we have a staff. Playing in the championship game is absolutely essential. That fire burns in our team. Our players are committed to greatness and they aren't done. They're focused on being present and sticking together." – Mary Kay Amicone
