Wildcats' Season Ends in Seattle

5/22/2022 12:22:00 AM | Softball

SEATTLE, Wash. – The historic 2022 season for the Weber State Wildcat softball team ended on Saturday, as the Cats fell to the Lehigh Mountain Hawks by a score of 5-4.

The scoreboard at Husky Softball Stadium stayed dark until the bottom of the fourth inning. The Wildcats, the designated home team, struck first on a sunny Seattle Saturday. Arissa Henderson led the inning off with a single to the outfield. Marissa Cerda come on as a pinch runner for Henderson and was moved to second base on a grounder from Chloe Camarero. The following batter, McKell McCuistion, came in and smacked a grounder through the hole that brought Cerda to the plate to break the stalemate.

Later on in the inning, after Noelle Foster came in to pinch run for McCuistion, a Lauren Hoe double thudded off the purple-padded walls at Husky Softball Stadium. Foster scored with ease, and Weber State extended its lead to 2-0.

Lehigh clapped back with a run of its own in the top of the fifth to cut the Cats' lead to 2-1. In the bottom half of the inning, Makayla Donahoo led things off with a single, and Mia Rushton followed that up with a single of her own. With two on and nobody out, the Wildcats got risky on the base paths and pulled off a double steal to move both runners into scoring position. Faith Hoe stepped up to the plate and sent a ball into the outfield that was deep enough to score Donahoo from third, and WSU had a 3-1 edge over the Mountain Hawks.

Rushton raced to third base to take another bag, and Henderson stepped up to the plate. She cranked a ball down the line that was barely, but clearly fair, and Rushton came home to score and make it a 4-1 ball game.

Lehigh scored on a leadoff solo home run in the top of the sixth and the score moved to 4-2 in favor of WSU.

In the top of the seventh, Lehigh's leadoff hitter walked and the following batter reached on a single. A groundout moved both runners over and the pair of Mountain Hawks scored on a single from the next hitter. A bases-loaded walk brought in the go-ahead run, and Weber State was unable to tie the ball game in the bottom of the seventh.

The Wildcats incredible, historic season came to an end with the 5-4 loss in the NCAA regionals.

There isn't much left to say about the 2022 Wildcats, who will likely go down in history as the best team to ever suit up for the school. This superlative-laden team brought the Big Sky Conference title back to Ogden and set all kinds of school and conference records. These Cats went on what was perhaps the most dominant run in Big Sky regular season and tournament play in conference history and will always be remembered for setting a new standard of excellence in the conference.

Weber State's 2022 season might not have ended the way that Wildcat Nation would have wanted to, but with many players returning next season and with a star-studded incoming recruiting class, there's no doubt that the future is bright at Wildcat Softball Field.
