Wildcats Capture Victory In Conference Opener, Beat PSU 4-3

Beaverton, OR – The Weber State men's tennis team notched its first Big Sky victory of the season as they defeated Portland State 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center. The 'Cats improved to 7-5 overall and 1-0 in conference action.
"It was nice to get our first conference win. We had to play really well to pull this one out," said head coach Brad Ferreira.
The Wildcats set the tone early with exceptional doubles play. The 'Cats took an early lead on all three courts securing the 1-0 advantage. Tristan Sarap and Elyes Marouani made quick work of Jonas Hembo Mathiasen and Simon Kuszynski, winning 6-4 at the No. two spot. Sebastian Buxman and Jordan Coutinho followed with a hard-fought 7-5 win of their own over Andrea Brignacca and Luka Jovanovic on court three to secure the opening point for WSU.
Keeping the momentum heading into singles play, the 'Cats stayed on top winning at the No. 3, 4, and 5 spots.
Following a Vikings win on court two, Elyes Marouani completed a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Jonas Hembo Mathiasen earning back the lead. Jordan Coutinho increased that lead to 3-1, as he took the upper hand against Gregory Gruenig 7(7)-6(0), 6-3. PSU continued to closely follow behind the Wildcats, earning their second point on court one. Securing the last point and the win on the day for the 'Cats was William Zulch who defeated Luka Jovanovic in a three-set match 6-7, 6-2, 6-3.
