OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Weber State softball nearly pulled off one of the biggest upsets in program history on Sunday, as they fell to the Northwestern Wildcats 6-4 in the USA Softball Complex.
For the second time this weekend, McKell McCuistion led WSU's offense off with a solo home run to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The offense continued as Faith Hoe and Mika Chong both reached base, Faith advancing to third base on a Lauren Hoe fly out to the outfield. Emily Ruhl stepped into the batter's box and hit a high fly ball to the outfield that was deep enough to score Faith from third. WSU took a 2-0 lead out of the first inning.
Amanda Johnson threw a second consecutive three-up-three-down inning in the circle for WSU to keep Northwestern off the board. Weber State came back up to bat and sophomore left fielder Gianna Memoli hit a towering fly ball well beyond the fence at the USA Softball Complex to extend Weber State's lead to a trio of runs.
Fast forwarding to the bottom of the sixth inning with the score still at 3-0 in favor of WSU, Lauren Hoe led the inning off with a single, followed by a defensive miscue from Northwestern that allowed Emily Ruhl to reach base. Makayla Donahoo also reached on a second consecutive error from Northwestern to load the bases. KC Whiting stepped in and grounded out which allowed Weber State to score a fourth run on the day.
In the top of the seventh, Weber State had Northwestern against the ropes with two outs and an 0-2 count, but a defensive mistake from WSU extended the game for Northwestern and NU went on to prove exactly why it made the 2022 College World Series. The Wildcats had a six-run rally with two outs to take the lead and steal the game from Weber State.
