Sweep in Swenson: Wildcats Dominate Wolverines for Fifth Straight Victory
9/12/2023 9:19:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
OGDEN – In one of its more dominating matches of the season, the Weber State Wildcats swept and recorded their sixth straight win against in-state rival Utah Valley.
A topsy-turvy first set started out in favor of the Wildcats on Tuesday evening in Swenson Gym. A kill from Dani Richins on the left pin finished off a four-point run that gave WSU an 11-6 advantage early on. Utah Valley countered by scoring seven of the next eight points to take a lead at 13-12. The Wolverines had a four-point edge at 20-16, but the Wildcats clawed their way back into what appeared to be a lost set. Back-to-back kills from Saane Katoa and Baylee Bodily sparked the Wildcat attack to cut the deficit in half. Following a UVU kill that turned the tally to 21-18, Bodily scored two kills in a row, followed by consecutive Richins aces, and back-to-back kills from Mia Peterson capped off a six-point swing and gave Weber State set point at 24-21. Another big swing from Peterson finished off the amazing comeback to give the 'Cats a 25-22 set victory.
UVU grabbed a quick 3-2 lead in the second frame, but that was the last lead the Wolverines would have for the rest of the match. A five-point run – highlighted by two Peterson kills – gave the 'Cats the lead for the rest of the match. Two straight Rose Moore aces helped balloon the Wildcat lead to 11-5, and WSU never looked back. Peterson took another big hack at the ball on the left side to close out the set once again, and Weber State snagged a 2-0 advantage in the match.
The third set of Tuesday's sweep was one of the most dominating stretches of volleyball that Weber State has played in Swenson Gym over the past few seasons.
With the score at 7-5, Jeremiah Larsen's squad kicked the offense into gear and the 'Cats left the Wolverines in their dust. A pair of Kate Standifird aces which were sandwiched by a pair of Richins kills gave WSU an 11-5 lead, and Weber State just hit the gas from that point on. Weber State took 10 of the next 11 points by using an array of sets, attackers, and picture-perfect serving that kept UVU on its heels. The third set symphony, orchestrated by Maestro Larsen, came to a close on a Liana Woodley tip that gave Weber State its final point of the night.
In an hour and 22 minutes, the sweep was complete and Weber State had capped off its fifth straight victory of this season, and its sixth consecutive conquest of its rivals from the south.
