Wildcats drop a pair on second day of Kajikawa Classic

The Wildcats resume tournament play Sunday, Feb. 11 for a game against Northwestern.
Phoenix, AZ – Weber State softball started day two of the Kajikawa Classic Saturday with a doubleheader against Northwestern and Grand Canyon. The Wildcats fell to Northwestern 2-3, and 5-6 to Grand Canyon.
Game One – Weber State: 2, Northwestern: 3
Game Two – Weber State: 5, Grand Canyon: 6
"We played two great games today. I loved our fight and gritty play. We made adjustments and played Wildcat softball in both games today. Abby Grundy sparked us early in the Northwestern game and our pitchers did a nice job for us."
Next: The Wildcats will return to the diamond on Sunday, Feb. 11 for their final game of the weekend. First pitch against Northwestern is scheduled for 9 a.m.

Game One – Weber State: 2, Northwestern: 3
- Northwestern scored early after Kansas Robinson hit a home run in the bottom of the first and slowly increased their lead as the game went on.
- Abby Grundy hit a home run in the top of the second which brought Taegan Smith home and scored two Weber State runs.
- Brooke Merrill pitched four complete innings, allowing eight hits, and three runs, while striking out two. She was relieved by Cali McCraw who pitched the remainder of the game.
- Northwestern got on the board again in the bottom of the fifth scoring two runs, highlighted by a two-run home run by Angela Zedak.
- Weber State had four total hits in the game with Taegan Smith leading the way going 2-3 from the plate.
Game Two – Weber State: 5, Grand Canyon: 6
- GCU got on the board first with a two-run home run from Lovey Kepa'a.
- In the top of the third, an error by GCU allowed Weber State to get their first run of the game.
- A couple of batters later, Weber State tied the game at 2-2 on an RBI double from Olivia Birkinshaw.
- The Wildcats continued their hot hitting in the top of the third with Sammy Gallegos singling up the middle and driving in two more runs, giving the Wildcats their first lead of the game at 4-2.
- Grand Canyon's biggest inning was the sixth, where they totaled four hits and four runs.
- The Wildcats cut the lead to one at the top of the seventh with an RBI single from Taegan Smith.
- Despite the Wildcat's run in the final frame, the game came to a close with a strikeout leaving two 'Cats left on base. Weber State ultimately fell 5-6 to Grand Canyon.
- Kiaria Smith led the way going 2-2 from the plate.
- With the loss, Weber State falls to 1-3 on the season.
