Weber State softball opens CBU Classic

Riverside, CA – The Wildcat softball team opened its tournament weekend with two games on its CBU Classic schedule, dropping a narrow decision to the Aggies, 3-2 and to the Lancers, 4-1 on Friday at the John C. Funk Stadium.

Game One - Weber State: 2 Utah State: 3

The first game of the day started with the Wildcats pushing across a run in the top of the opening frame thanks to a Kiaira Smith double to left center field.
In the second, USU crafted a three-run rally to grab the lead, 3-1.
Taegan Smith singled to first base and then advanced to second on a throwing error in the top of the seventh inning. Eva Richardson doubled down the left field line allowing Smith to find home plate and added one more for the Wildcats.
Weber State rallied in their half of the final frame, rattling off three hits. Unfortunately, the Wildcats were not able to find any more runs and brought the contest to a close with a 3-2 win for the Aggies.
Cali McCraw pitched 4.2 innings for the Wildcats with two hits, zero runs and one strikeout.
Weber State had a total of 11 hits in the game with Smith leading the way going 3-1 from the plate.

Game Two - Weber State: 1 California Baptist: 4

The California Baptist Lancers got the early lead with an RBI single that brought in Merissa Borkowski in the bottom of the fifth.
A two run double, for the Lancers Maya Avila helped to bring the CBU lead to 3-0. Avila shortly advanced to third on a wild pitch and found the home plate following a pop up to second base to add to the Lancers tally.
An RBI triple to right center by Sienna Solis got the Wildcats on the board in the sixth.
Weber State couldn't drive in enough runs and were unable to find the hit to produce the go-ahead tally. California Baptist finished the contest in their favor 4-1.
Sienna Solis led the way going 1-1 from the plate.
With the loss, Weber State falls to 1-6 on the season.

Next: The Wildcats return to the diamond on Saturday, Feb. 17 for two more games. First pitch against CSU Bakersfield is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. followed by a game against California Baptist at 6:00 p.m. Only CBU games will be streamed on ESPN+. Live stats can be found at WeberStateSports.com.
