Men’s Tennis Takes Down Portland State For First Conference Win

Ogden, UT — The Wildcat men's tennis team defeated conference foe Portland State 5-2 in the second conference match of the year for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats were unable to secure any points towards their total during doubles matches. The duo of Elyes Marouani and Tristan Sarap fell in the No. 1 match 6-4 and Tuan (Ken) Minh and partner Matteo Savio lost on court three 6-2. These two results caused the match on court two to go unfinished at 5-4 in favor of the Vikings.
In singles play however, the 'Cats dominated. They won five matches all without forcing a third set and William Zulch on court four pushed his opponent to the brink before falling short 10-8 in the third set. Tuan Minh clinched the match for the Wildcats on court five with his 6-3, 6-4 victory to secure the fourth team point needed for victory. Domination in singles play was the theme as Elyes Marouani, Tristan Sarap, Jordan Coutinho, Tuan Minh, and Matteo Savio all won their matches in just two sets with minimal points against them.
The team moves to 1-1 in conference play on the season and will play host to the 3-10 Idaho Vandals next Friday morning at the Ogden Athletic Club. Despite the 3-10 record, Idaho is currently 2-1 in conference play on the season and will provide a good test for the 'Cats as they move deeper into conference play and head towards the Big Sky tournament in Phoenix the last week of April.
