Trafny is the first Wildcat to qualify for the NCAA Championships in the javelin since 1998.

Weber State's Josh Trafny is NCAA-bound! Trafny qualified for the NCAA Championships in the javelin after his performance at the NCAA First Round meet Wednesday in Fayetteville, Arkansas,

Trafny qualified for the NCAA Championships by finishing 12th in the west region Wednesday.

He is the first Weber State male athlete to qualify for the NCAA Championships in the javelin since 1998.

Trafny posted a mark of 226-0 in the event Wednesday to qualify for the NCAA's.

Earlier this year, Trafny posted a career-best mark of 242-03 in the javelin, which is the second-best mark in Weber State history and the third-best in Big Sky history.

He also finished second in the event at the Big Sky Championships.

Also competing Wednesday in the javelin was teammate Cody Canard. He finished 27th with a mark of 211-0.

Both Trafny and Canard have qualified for the US Olympic Trials in the javelin in June.

"Extremely proud of Josh for all he has fought through," said WSU head coach Corbin Talley. "The opportunity to compete at the NCAA finals is huge for him. He's worked hard and battled through a number of setbacks so it's very fulfilling to see him pull off a qualifying performance. I have been so impressed with how hard Josh and Cody work. They show tremendous teamwork and passion for the Javelin. We're going to miss them a lot."

Two other Wildcats also competed Wednesday in the preliminary rounds. Kelton Gagnon just missed qualifying for the finals in the 1500 meters. He posted a career-best time of 3:45.46 in the event to finish 21st and missed qualifying for the finals by just one spot. That time ranks as the fifth-best in Weber State history.

"Kelton ran a very gutsy race and just missed advancing by one spot," Talley added. "I'm so excited about his future and about the season he's had in the 1500. This is just his sophomore year and is going to be some great things. One thing I can say about Kelton said he always races with. And this was no different."

Rodee Brow finished 44th in the 400 meters with a time of 47.65.

Weber State had four athletes competing in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase on Friday. Bronson Winter led the Wildcats with a 23rd-place finish with a time of 8:58.32, followed by Peter Visser who was 24th at 8:59.40.

Ty Davis was 43rd in the event with a time of 9:24.28 with Jamison Wilkes placing 44th at 9:27.48.

"It was a rough one for these steeplechasers who have worked very hard all season," Talley said. "They are gritty guys who have put their full heart into being great at this event. They're the fastest steeple "squad" in Weber history, and I'm very proud of their season. It's only the 2nd time in team history that we've had four qualify for regionals in a single event. We didn't get any through to the NCAA finals which was the goal, but they all gave incredible efforts."

The NCAA Championships will be held June 5-8 in Eugene, Oregon.
