Wildcats dominate Vikings for first Big Sky win

Weber State forced five turnovers, including four interceptions in 43-27 win.
The Wildcat defense had four interceptions and a fumble recovery and rushed for 220 yards in the win.Â
Weber State set the tone early, scoring on its opening possession when Sloan Calder drilled a 48-yard field goal to cap a five-play drive. Moments later, Ishaan Daniels intercepted a pass and returned it 20 yards for a touchdown to give the 'Cats a 9-0 lead.Â
Calder connected again from 34 yards out just before halftime to give the Wildcats a 12–6 advantage at the break.
The Wildcats broke the game open in the third quarter with 17 points. On the first drive, Chauncey Sylvester finished off a 78-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run, then Calder added his third field goal of the day — a 44-yarder — to push the lead to 22–6.Â
Weber State's defense answered again as Chevy Robinson forced a fumble and Zach Hrbacek capitalized with a five-yard touchdown run to make it 29–6.
In the fourth quarter, Kao Hansen had another interception, then Will Way received a fumble in the end zone for another Wildcat touchdown.Â
On the next offensive series, Spencer Ferguson broke loose for a 24-yard touchdown run, his first caterer touchdown. Portland State added two late touchdowns to bring the final score to 43–27.
Weber State dominated on the ground, rushing for 220 yards and four touchdowns. Sylvester had a career-high 136 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries, averaging 7.1 yards per rush.Â
Dijon Jennings was 13 of 19 passing for 123 yards, while freshman Kingston Tisdell saw action for the first time and threw for 27 yards. Marvin Session led the Wildcats' receivers with three catches for 58 yards, including a 47-yard completion on the first play of the game.Â
The Wildcat defense set the tone throughout, forcing five turnovers and holding Portland State to just 65 rushing yards on 33 attempts.Â
Hansen had two interceptions, while Daniels and Montae Pate each had one.Â
Mayson Hitchens had 11 tackles and Josh Hardy, Chevy Robinson, and Ashden Oberg each recorded sacks.Â
Calder was 3 of 3 on field goal attempts, coming from 48, 34, and 44 yards.Â
The Wildcats improved to 3-4 on the season and 1-2 in conference play.
Weber State is back home for the next two games, beginning Saturday against Eastern Washington. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. at Stewart Stadium.Â
