Game 8: Weber State returns home to host Eagles Saturday

Wildcats host Eastern Washington Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Stewart Stadium.

• After a road win, it's back home for two straight games for Weber State as the Wildcats host Eastern Washington Saturday afternoon at Stewart Stadium. 

• The Wildcats are 3-4 overall and 1-2 in Big Sky play and are coming off a 43-27 win at Portland State on Saturday. 

• Eastern Washington is 3-4 overall and 2-1 in Big Sky play. The Eagles have won three of their last four games. 

• The Wildcats forced five turnovers in the win at Portland State.

Kao Hansen was named Big Sky Defensive Player of the Week 

• This is Eastern Washington's first visit to Ogden in three years. The Wildcats are 10-7 all-time against the Eagles at Stewart Stadium. 

• It's State Connect Day for Weber State on Saturday as the Wildcats will wear a beehive logo as a tribute to Utah on the helmets for this week's game.

Saturday's game will kickoff at 1:00 p.m. at Elizabeth Dee Shaw Stewart Stadium in Ogden. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and the ESPN app with Tony Parks and Riley Jensen calling the action. 

The Weber State radio broadcast will be on 103.1 FM with Carl Arky and former WSU head coach and athletic director Jerry Graybeal on the call.

State Connect Day for Weber State    

On Saturday, Weber State will have a new logo on its helmet as the Wildcats debut a new State Connect logo. The logo on the black helmets is the beehive from the Utah state flag, a tribute to Utah statehood. Both sides of the helmets will have the beehive logo for this week's game.  

Wildcats bounce back with big win at Portland State

   Weber State bounced back win a dominating 43-27 win at Portland State on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcat defense forced five turnovers and the 'Cats ran for 220 yards and four touchdowns in the win. 

WSU put up 370 yards of total offense and had rushing touchdowns by Boogie Sylvester, Spencer Ferguson, and Zach Hrbacek. Will Way also had a fumble recovery touchdown. 

Defense forces five turnovers      

The Wildcat defense forced a season-high five turnovers and had a defensive touchdown in Saturday's win. 

Ishaan Daniels started the defensive performance with a interception that he returned 20 yards for a touchdown that gave Weber State a 9-0 lead, less than four minutes into the game. It was WSU's second interception return touchdown of the season. 

Montae Pate intercepted a pass late in the second quarter, his first of the year, that led to a Wildcat field goal. 

Kao Hansen then had two interceptions in the second half. Freshman Chevy Robinson also forced and recovered a Viking fumble. 

Mayson Hitchens led the defense with 11 tackles and Josh Hardy had 3.5 tackles for loss, including one sack. The 'Cats totaled 12.5 tackles for loss and held the Vikings to 65 yards rushing, the fewest allowed by the Wildcats this season. 

Kao Hansen named Big Sky Defensive Player of the Week       

After his performance in helping Weber State to the road win, Wildcat junior safety Kao Hansen has been named the Big Sky Defensive Player of the Week. 

Hansen had two interceptions and six tackles in Saturday's win, part of five turnovers forced by the Wildcat defense. 

He picked off a pass in the third quarter and returned it five yards, which led to a WSU field goal. 

In the fourth quarter, he intercepted another pass and returned it 14 yards to the PSU one-yard line, and the Wildcats scored a touchdown on the next play. 

The two interception returns totaled 19 yards. He also finished with six tackles, including five solo tackles. 

Hansen is in his fourth season in the WSU program and has played in 32 games in his Wildcat career. He has 25 tackles in seven games this season. 

Boogie Sylvester continues strong play     

It was a career game for the second straight game for Wildcat red shirt freshman Chauncey "Boogie" Sylvester. He had 19 carries for a career-high 135 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's win, an average of 7.1 yards per carry. 

He had a long run of 43 yards and also had a one-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. He also had two receptions for nine yards. 

In the last two games, Sylvester has rushed for 218 yards and two touchdowns. 

Three more field goals for Sloan Calder             

   Wildcat senior Sloan Calder was 3 for 3 on field goal attempts in Saturday's win. He has made his last six field goal attempts. 

He made field goals of 48, 34, and 44 yards and also handled kickoffs and extra points for the Wildcats. 

He is 12 of 14 on field goals this season and currently leads the Big Sky and is second in the nation in field goals per game at 1.71. He is also 13th in the country in field goal percentage at 85.7 percent. He is 5 for 5 on field goals of at least 40 yards and 9 for 10 from at least 30 yards. 

Two quarterbacks see time for the 'Cats      

In Saturday's win, Weber State had two quarterbacks see time on the field. Junior Dijon Jennings started his second straight game and was 13 of 19 passing for 123 yards. He has thrown for 317 yards and two touchdowns in the last three games. 

True freshman Kingston Tisdell also played for the first time in his career. He was 2 of 6 passing for 27 yards in his debut at Portland State. 

WSU's previous starting quarterback sophomore transfer Jackson Gilkey suffered a broken fibula in the game at UC Davis and will miss the rest of the season after surgery last week. Gilkey transferred to WSU from UTSA and started the first five games of the season. He threw for 693 yards and four touchdowns and also rushed for 227 yards and another touchdown. 

Redshirt freshman Cash McCollum, a transfer from UTSA, is also out indefinitely with a broken right hand. 

Team captains  

As selected by their teammates, Weber State has named four captains for the 2025 season. Wildcat senior fullback Colter May, senior offensive lineman Gavin Ortega, senior wide receiver Jayleen Record, and junior defensive tackle Keahnist Thompson will be the team captains for the 2025 season. Record is a captain for the second-straight season. May and Ortega were both selected as preseason All-Big Sky selections. 

About Eastern Washington 

The Eagles of Eastern Washington come to Ogden at 3-4 overall and 2-1 in Big Sky play and have won three of their last four games. 

Like Weber State, Eastern Washington started the season with the first three and four of the first five games on the road. The Eagles lost at Incarnate Word, Boise State, and Northern Iowa to start the season, then beat Western Illinois for the first win of the year. 

They started Big Sky play with a loss at nationally-ranked Montana State, but have since won back-to-back games with home wins over Portland State and a 21-14 win over Idaho last week.  

This season the Eagles rank second in the conference in red zone defense and are third in the Big Sky and 15th in the nation in sacks allowed at 1.1 per game. The Eagles are also third in the Big Sky in kickoff returns and fourth in kickoff return defense. 

Individually, sophomore quarterback Nate Bell is second in the Big Sky in rushing at 88.4 yards per game and is 14th in the nation in yards per carry at 6.5. He has rushed for seven touchdowns this season.  

The Eagles are coached by Aaron Best who is in his ninth season as head coach at EWU. Best has won 55 games with the Eagles and has led Eastern Washington to the FCS Playoffs three times, including the FCS Championship game in 2018. Best also played at Eastern Washington from 1996-99. 

Series history

  This will be the 39th meeting all-time between the two schools with Eastern Washington holding a 20-18 series lead. The last meeting was a 31-23 EWU win in Cheney in October 2023 as the teams did not play last season. The Eagle win two years ago snapped a four-game Weber State winning streak. 

In games in Ogden, the Wildcats hold a 10-7 advantage and Weber State has won the last two games. The Eagles last trip to Stewart Stadium was a 45-21 Weber State win in October 2022.  

Quick hits

  Weber State was without sophomore running back Davion Godley due to a concussion, but he is expected to return this week...The Wildcats have had just one turnover in the last three games...Weber State shutout the Vikings 17-0 in the third quarter of Saturday's win and is now leading its opponents in the third quarter...WSU is 3-0 this season and 11-2 under coach Mental when leading after the first quarter and 3-0 and 12-2 when leading at halftime. 

Looking ahead

  After Saturday, it's another home game for the Wildcats as they will host longtime rival Montana on Saturday, November 1 at Stewart Stadium. 

The final four games of the season will be rivalry games as the 'Cats play Montana, Montana State, Idaho State, and Northern Arizona to close the season. Those are the four opponents Weber State has played most in its history.
