Wildcats drop overtime heartbreaker at Utah

SALT LAKE CITY - Weber State dropped a heartbreaker in overtime as the 'Cats fell 92-89 to the Utah Utes Saturday night at the Huntsman Center.
Weber State led for nearly 30 minutes of the game and built an 11-point advantage in the first half before Utah rallied late to force overtime and escape with the narrow win.
The Wildcats came out hot, shooting 55 percent from the field in the first half and scoring 49 points before halftime to take a 49-42 lead at the break.Â
WSU led by 10 points with 8:11 to play in the second half and held a seven-point lead with 4:15 to play, before the Utes ended the half on a 15-8 run to tie the game at 84-84 the end of regulation.Â
Utah never trailed in overtime and built a five-point lead and held on as WSU's final 3-point attempt failed.Â
Five Wildcats scored in double figures, led by Jace Whiting with 15 points. Trevor Hennig and Malek Gomma each added 14 points, and Tijan Saine Jr. had 13, along with a team-high four assists. Viljami Vartiainen had 10 points.Â
In his first game with the Wildcats, Edwin Suarez Jr. had a team-high 11 rebounds.Â
Weber State shot 45 percent from the field, compared to 40 percent from the Utes. The 'Cats knocked down six 3-pointers and outrebounded Utah 52-49.Â
The Wildcats face two more road games next week, playing at Utah State on Wednesday and at UC Irvine on Saturday.Â
