Weber State picks up 64-60 road win at Kansas City

Malek Gomma led the ‘Cats with career-highs of 19 points and 13 rebounds as the ‘Cats sweep Roos.

KANSAS CITY - Malek Gomma had a double-double and helped Weber State pick up its first road win of the season Wednesday night, with a 64-60 win at Kansas City.

Gomma had a career night for his first double-double as a Wildcat. He had 19 points and 13 rebounds, both career-highs, and was 9 of 13 from the field. He also tied his career-high with three steals.

With the game tied 52-52 with 5:22 to play, Weber State went on a 10-2 run and took its largest lead of eight points with three minutes to play.

Kansas City had a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 62-60 with 1:24 to play, but Weber State was able to make key stops in the final minute and hung on for the win.

WSU shot 41 percent from the field and was just 5 of 20 from 3-point range, but the 'Cats held the Roos to 35 percent shooting and won the rebounding battle 40-39.

Weber State shot just 50 percent from the free throw line and committed 18 turnovers, but did have a season-high 12 steals.

Nigel Burris added 14 points and made three key 3-pointers for the Wildcats. He was 4 of 7 from the field, including 3 of 5 from 3-point range. He also added three rebounds.

Jace Whiting added nine points with six rebounds and five assists. Trevor Hennig had eight points, seven rebounds, three assists, and three steals.

After Sunday's loss at St. Thomas, Weber State's flight home was delayed and then canceled Sunday night, so WSU took a bus to Kansas City on Monday.

"We didn't look like ourselves, and we've dealt with a lot this week, but we can feel really good that we dug down and found a way to win," said WSU head coach Eric Duft. "I'm really proud of our guys for doing that and finding a way to make enough plays. Malek and Nigel were outstanding for us and made huge plays."

The win completed a season sweep for the 'Cats over the Roos. WSU won 82-61 in Ogden on November 29.

Weber State improves to 5-5 on the season. The Wildcats now have a week off until their next game, which will be the final road game of this three-game trip. Weber State plays at Utah Valley on Dec. 17.

The next home game will be on Saturday, Dec. 20, against Utah Tech.
