‘Cats fall at St. Thomas in Big Sky-Summit League Challenge

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Weber State could not overcome a slow first half as St. Thomas led wire-to-wire and knocked off the Wildcats 88-65 Sunday in the final game of the Big Sky-Summit League Challenge at the brand new Lee & Penny Anderson Arena in St. Paul.
St. Thomas was the preseason favorite in the Summit League and has now won 22-straight home games, tied with Duke for the longest active streak in the country.
The Tommies led 9-7 with 15:31 to play in the first half, but then went on a 27-5 run over the next eight minutes and led 36-12. St. Thomas held a 47-23 lead at halftime after shooting 59 percent from the field. The Wildcats shot just 25 percent in the half.
Weber State started the second half on a 7-0 run, but another 10-2 St. Thomas run kept the Tommies in control, and WSU was never closer than 16 points in the second half.
St. Thomas shot 57 percent from the field and held the Wildcats to 42 percent shooting. The Tommies knocked down nine 3-pointers and forced 17 Weber State turnovers. St. Thomas had 14 steals and scored 26 points off WSU's turnovers. The Wildcats won the rebounding battle 34-31.
Jace Whiting led three Wildcats in double figures in scoring with 17 points, along with four assists and four steals. He was also 3 of 5 from 3-point range.
Trevor Hennig added 15 points, and Tijan Saine Jr. had 12 points and three assists.
Malek Gomma had six points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
Nolan Minessale from St. Thomas had 32 points with five assists, four steals, and two blocks. He currently has scored the most points of any player in the country this season.
Sunday's game was the first of three straight road games for the Wildcats, who will play at Kansas City on Wednesday. The 'Cats beat the Roos 82-61 on November 29 in Ogden.
