OGDEN - Weber State softball won 6-5 this Saturday afternoon courtesy of an Emma Bingham three-run home run in the sixth inning to close out their home series opening weekend.Â
Off to a good start, Taegan Smith tripled to put herself in scoring position. Up at bat, Abby Grundy then singled to center field for the first RBI of the game.Â
The Toreros then got themselves in scoring position in the top of the second, as Shawnese Hogue-Lacy reached on a Wildcat error and advanced to third. She then advanced home to equal out the score off a fly out to center field.Â
It was a quick up and down for the Wildcats in the bottom of the second as the Toreros moved to the top of the third.Â
Doing some damage in the third, Alyssa Hernandez doubled for two RBI and the Toreros went up 3-1.Â
Solid defense for San Diego kept the Wildcats scoreless. Weber State recorded a hit in the bottom of the fourth on a Jordan Hart single but with two outs on the board, a fly out to second retired the side.Â
The Toreros tacked on some insurance in the fifth to extend the advantage 4-1.Â
The 'Cats responded in the bottom of the inning as Mariyah Delgado singled to right field but advanced to third off an error allowing Olivia Birkinshaw to find home plate. Unable to find any more offense, the inning closed for the Wildcats with one left on base.Â
Bases were loaded for the Toreros in the top of the sixth however, Cali McCraw caught a ground ball to throw out home allowing Jordan Hart to quickly throw to first base and make the double play getting the Wildcats out of a tight jam.Â
A critical inning for the Wildcats came in the bottom of the sixth. Bases were loaded as pinch hitter Emma Bingham stepped up to bat. Bingham hit a home run, her second of the season to give the Wildcats the lead 5-4.Â
Not finished there, a Delgado single for an RBI extended the 'Cats lead by two. The inning then closed as Weber State totaled four runs and five hits with two left on base.Â
Needing to do some work in the seventh, the Toreros totaled one hit but it was not enough as the Wildcat defense shut down the game with a 6-5 home win.Â
Cali McCraw took the win (4-4) pitching a complete game with one strikeout.Â
Hart and Birkinshaw both recorded two hits. Bingham led the team with three RBI and recorded the game winning three-run home run.Â
