Wildcats top Aggies 4-3 in Logan

LOGAN, Utah - Weber State softball secured a 4-3 win against Utah State despite the Aggies late run efforts in the final inning.Â
An early advantage was grabbed by the Wildcats to start the game, courtesy of a first inning uprising that included a Taegan Smith triple for an RBI and a run scoring Abby Grundy single.Â
A Grundy double in the third inning put her in scoring position. Olivia Birkinshaw then singled through the right side to bring Grundy home and put the Wildcats up 3-0.Â
Adding some insurance in the seventh, Sadie Kirk reached on a fielder's choice for her 21 RBI of the season.Â
The Aggies tacked on their first run in the bottom of the seventh off a double down the right field line. Hoping to use that momentum to rally a late run win, Raina NavaroÂ
With no outs on the board and bases loaded, the Aggies Tatum Silvia walked, cutting the deficit to two.Â
A Wildcat pitching change then put Joslynn Veltien back in the circle.Â
Utah State put another on the board to advance the 4-3. An Aggie single then again loaded the bases.Â
Needing to get out of the jam, the Aggies grounded out at third base allowing the Wildcats to then throw out first and make the double play to close out the game 4-3 in favor of the purple and white.Â
Weber State allowed the Aggies only eight hits throughout the game with four of those coming in the final inning.Â
Veltien earned the win (4-5) facing 28 batters and recording one strikeout. Grundy led the team going 4-for-4 at bat with two runs and an RBI. Weber State totaled 11 hits compared to Utah State's eight.Â
