Wildcats split Big Sky opener with Vikings

OGDEN - The Weber State softball squad split their Big Sky opener taking the first game against Portland State 6-1 and dropping the second 9-6.Â
GAME ONE
Weber State 6, Portland State 1
With runners on second and third in the bottom of the first, freshman Sadie Kirk who is hitting .375 on the season, put the Wildcats on the board following a two RBI single.
Not allowing Portland State any offense in the top of the second, pitcher Cali McCraw struck out two and only allowed the Vikings one hit.Â
With bases loaded in the top of the third, Taegan Smith caught a pop up to short and retired the side to shut down any Portland State momentum.Â
Adding an additional run in the bottom of the fourth, Wildcat Taegan Smith singled for her sixth RBI of the season.Â
The Vikings found their first run of the game off a Lorraine Alo home run.Â
Weber State went on to total three more runs throughout the game. Kiaira Smith scored off a wild pitch, Tori Rey off a Kirk walk and Riley Whalen off a fly out to center field.Â
Unable to create any offense in the top of the seventh, the Wildcats went on to win their first Big Sky game of the season 6-1.Â
Kiaira Smith went 2-for-4 at bat with one run and two doubles.Â
McCraw took the win (5-4) pitching a complete game. She faced 29 batters and totaled four strikeouts.Â
GAME TWO
Weber State 6, Portland State 9
The Vikings struck first to start the second game, as Natalia Martinez doubled to center field for an RBI.Â
Weber State's Taegan Smith responded in the bottom of the first with a home run, her second this season.Â
A 4-1 lead for the Vikings came off a Nichole Orozco home run in the top of the third.Â
Working at the deficit, Kirk doubled to left field for an RBI and Kiaira Smith singled for an RBI to advance the score to three for the Wildcats.Â
Portland State added on some insurance off an RBI double to put the score 5-3 in the fourth. The Vikings then advanced the score 7-3 in the fifth.
Still battling at the deficit, a Kirk RBI double and shortly after an Abby Grundy two RBI double put the 'Cats down by just one at 7-6.Â
Portland State advanced the score again 9-6 and the Wildcats were at bat in the bottom of the seventh.Â
Weber State totaled one hit in the final inning but were unable to generate any offense. Portland State then retired the inning to secure the game 9-6.
Kirk went 3-for-4 at bat with two RBI and two doubles. Taegan Smith went 2-for-4 at bat with two runs and a single RBI.

Weber State will close out the series tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for noon.Â
