Wildcats split day one of Rams Invitational

FORT COLLINS, Colo. -Â Weber State softball split the day with a 11-7 loss to the Rams, then responded in the second game with a 9-7 win.
GAME ONE
Weber State 7, Colorado State 11
Bats started out hot for Colorado State as the Rams scored two runs in the first inning. The Rams, Kyra Smith recorded the first RBI of the day. Off the next pitch, a Jailey Wilson single brought in one more run. Two more for the green and white came in the bottom of the fourth and the Rams went up 4-0 over the Wildcats.
Weber State found momentum in the top of the fifth inning when senior Abby Grundy brought home Olivia Birkinshaw from second base. Off the next pitch catcher Eva Richardson doubled to bring Grundy home. The Wildcats closed out the top of the fifth trailing the Rams by two at 4-2.Â
With bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, the Rams walked to earn their fifth run of the game. Immediately after, a Colorado State triple earned Wilson three RBI and the Rams were up 8-2. Colorado State totaled one more run before closing out the inning 9-2.Â
Weber State battled in the top of the sixth, bringing in five runs to put the Wildcats down by two at 9-7. Grundy singled for three RBI and Richardson hit a home run to right field.Â
The Rams extended their lead with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Unable to surpass Colorado State's advantage in the seventh inning, three Wildcat outs secured the game for the Rams 11-7.Â
Cali McCraw took the loss (2-2) facing 18 batters in 4.0 innings. Wildcats Riley Whalen, Grundy and Richardson all totaled two hits. This was the fifth home run for Richardson this season. Apple Maldonado totaled six putouts.Â
GAME TWO
Weber State 9, Colorado State 7
Olivia Birkinshaw put the Wildcats on the board within the fourth pitch of the second game as she hit a home run to left center field for two RBI.Â
The Rams brought in one run in the bottom of the first and an additional two in the second to take the lead 3-2.Â
Apple Maldonado singled in the fourth inning to bring the Wildcats score to three. A dominating purple and white squad then totaled five runs in the fifth inning to take the lead 8-7. Sadie Kirk hit a home run for three RBI, Richardson doubled to left center and Maldonado flew out to both total a single RBI.
With two innings to go, Weber State tacked on an additional run for insurance and stayed strong defensively to secure the win 9-7.
Joslynn Veltien took the win (3-4) facing 23 batters and pitching 4.0 innings. Richardson went 2-for-4 at bat and totaled one RBI to lead the squad. Maldonado totaled five putouts.Â
