Wildcats split two on final day of Rams Invitational

FORT COLLINS, Colo. -Â Weber State softball split its final of four games at the Rams Invitational, losing to Colorado State 7-6 in the first game of the day and winning 1-0 in the second.Â
GAME ONE
Weber State 6, Colorado State 7Â
Off to a hot start, Colorado State totaled six runs off of four hits in the bottom of the first inning.Â
The Wildcats found their footing in the third inning putting two runs on the board. Olivia Birkinshaw singled for one RBI and Abby Grundy flew out allowing Sadie Kirk to run home.Â
Not finished there, Riley Whalen hit a triple down the left field line for two RBI. Whalen then found home plate off a wild pitch and the Wildcats trailed by one at 6-5.Â
In the top of the fifth inning, Sammy Gallegos singled for one RBI and the score was tied 6-6.Â
The Wildcats managed to keep the Rams scoreless until the bottom of the seventh when Kaylynn English reached on a fielder's choice to second base and Autumn Rutherford scored to end the game 7-6.Â
Jayci Finch took the loss (1-5) pitching 5.0 innings and facing 20 batters. Finch totaled one strikeout.Â
Whalen went 1-for-3 at bat with one run and two RBI. The Wildcat squad went 7-for-24 at bat and totaled 18 putouts.Â
GAME TWO
Weber State 1, Colorado State 0
The Wildcats struck first in this one, putting up the first run of the game in the third inning. Taegan Smith singled to advance Tori Rey home.Â
The WSU defense held strong, not allowing Colorado State a single run as the Wildcats went on to win the game 1-0.Â
Cali McCraw (3-2) pitched a complete game facing 27 batters and totaling two strikeouts.Â
The Wildcats totaled six hits compared to the Rams four. Smith led the team going 1-for-3 at bat with one RBI. Apple Maldonado totaled 11 putouts.Â

The Wildcats head to Moraga, California for the Saint Mary's Tournament. Weber State will start the tournament against Columbia and SMC. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m.Â
