Wildcats secure in-state matchup 4-2 over Wolverines

OGDEN - Weber State softball secured the in-state matchup against the Utah Valley Wolverines 4-2 at Wildcat Softball Field this Tuesday afternoon.
The Wildcats generated some offense in the bottom of the second inning. Jordan McMahon reached base on an error, and Tori Rey followed with a single. However, a ground out retired the side, leaving two Wildcats stranded on base.
Utah Valley loaded the bases in the top of the third, but a tough Wildcat defense retired the side on a ground out to second base.
Weber State was the first to score, courtesy of an Olivia Birkinshaw RBI single. The Wildcats added another run when Mariyah Delgado reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Abby Grundy to cross home plate.
The Wildcats extended their lead when Taegan Smith hit an RBI triple, the fourth of her career, putting the 'Cats up 3-0.
Utah Valley answered with back-to-back runs in the top of the sixth to narrow the Wildcats lead to 3-2.
The final run for Weber State came in the bottom of the sixth when Emma Bingham hit her first double of the season to bring McMahon home.
Jayci Finch entered to pitch the final inning. It was three up, three down for the Wolverines as the Wildcats closed out the game with a 4-2 victory in the top of the seventh.
Brooke Merrill earned the win (2-2) after pitching six innings with an ERA of 8.02. Taegan Smith led the team, going 2-for-3 at the plate and recording one triple.

Weber State will host Idaho State in a weekend series starting Friday, April 11. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.Â
