Weber State had the top five collegiate finishers in the meet.
It was a win in the first meet for the Weber State men's cross country team as the Wildcats opened the season by taking the title at the Utah State Alumni Challenge.Â
The Wildcats totaled 15 points to defeat Utah State and Idaho State in the meet.Â
Weber State had five of the top six runners in the meet, including the top five collegiate runners.Â
Jake Peterson finished second and was the top collegiate finisher with a time of 20:42.4 on the 7K course.Â
Owen Rogers finished third at 20:53.8, and Peter Visser was fourth at 20:55.9.Â
Kelton Gagnon finished fifth with a time of 20:59.4, and Ty Davis took sixth at 21:02.3.Â
"We're excited to have our cross country season underway," said WSU head coach Corbin Talley. "The guys have put in a lot of work this summer, and it was fun to open strong as a team.Â
"I was proud of the way they executed and raced well together. They showed toughness and grit that we need to build on in the upcoming season. The top five average time of 20:56 was a team time record on the course (from any team). I was very pleased with the top five spread of 20 seconds.Â
"Jake Peterson had a fantastic opener to lead the way for us. Although he was second to an unattached athlete, he was under the previous meet record by eight seconds.
"We will keep focusing on the day to day process and preparing for some bigger mid season invitationals."
The Wildcats will compete again next Friday, September 5, at the BYU Autumn Classic.Â
