The Weber State men's cross country team will close out the championship portion of its season Saturday, traveling to Flagstaff, Arizona, for the 2026 Big Sky Cross Country Championships.
The Wildcats will compete at an elevation of approximately 7,000 feet, presenting both a physical and mental challenge as Weber State takes on some of the top teams in the conference.
"Racing at 7,000 feet will definitely test us physically and mentally," Weber State head coach Corbin Talley said. "I am hoping to see a lot of grit and toughness."
The Wildcats enter the championships after a season that has featured steady development from a young group. Weber State returns just two runners who competed at the Big Sky Championships a year ago, giving the Wildcats a relatively inexperienced championship squad.
"Through some ups and downs this year, we have learned a lot about ourselves and grown a lot," Talley said. "This is a young team. We only returned two guys who ran at the championships for us last year. I'm really proud of the development of the guys who are lining up at the Big Sky Championships this week."
Weber State has continued to show its growth throughout the season, highlighted by a second-place team finish at the Bill Dellinger Invitational earlier this month. Jacob Peterson led the way with a fourth-place finish and a season-best 23:54 in the 8K, while Tyler Spencer followed in seventh with a personal-best 24:04.
Peterson and Spencer have been two of the Wildcats' most consistent leaders throughout the season, and Talley will look to the duo to lead Weber State into the championship race.
"Jake Peterson and Tyler Spencer have led the way for us all year," Talley said. "I'm excited to see what they can do."
Behind Peterson and Spencer, Weber State will rely on a strong pack that has continued to develop throughout the season. Evan Harris, Paul Scown, Raivio Manzer and Jess Christiansen have provided consistency for the Wildcats and will play an important role in the team's performance Saturday.
"Our pack of Evan, Paul, Raivio and Jess has also been solid," Talley said.
Weber State will face a strong Big Sky field, including nationally ranked Northern Arizona and a Montana State squad that Talley expects to be among the conference's top teams.
"We are facing some phenomenal teams, Northern Arizona who is nationally ranked and Montana State, who always puts together a solid squad," Talley said. "We hope to mix it up with both teams."
With a young group that has continued to grow throughout the season, the Wildcats will look to bring the lessons they've learned into their biggest race of the year.
"We've worked really hard and come together well," Talley said.
