Wildcats fall in heartbreaker to Wolverines
9/15/2025 9:30:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Ogden, UT - The Weber State Wildcats fell at home to the Utah Valley Wolverines 4-3 at home on Monday. The Wolverines scored three unanswered goals in the second half to pull out the win.
"We are just trying to prepare and make sure we are heading in the right direction going into conference. It is a really good opponent, and there are a lot of positives we will take from this," Head Coach Kyle Christensen said. "Overall, a good performance, still going the right direction, just unlucky it finished the way that it did."
The Wildcats took a 2-1 lead into halftime thanks to goals from Tenzi Knowles and Grace Kirby in the 19th and 21st minutes, respectively.
Utah Valley broke through a couple of minutes later in the 22nd minute to get within one at the break.
The Wildcats outshot the Wolverines 9-8 in the first half, and a couple of saves from Lauren Butorac, 5 to be exact, limited Utah Valley to just the one goal.
The 'Cats had opportunities in the second half, including a Simone Packer shot from just outside the box in the 51st minute.
Sammie Sofonia added to the lead in the 58th minute thanks to Grace Kirby's 2nd assist of the night.
The Wolverines answered back with 3 unanswered goals, including two quick ones in the 63rd and 67th minutes. UVU pulled in front for good in the 80th minute to give themselves a 4-3 lead they would not relinquish.
The Wildcats had one final chance in the closing seconds as Bella Sackett sent a ball into the box right to Sayler Schlosser. The ball went off her foot and wide right of the goal to dash any Weber State hopes of a comeback.
"We have to take this as preparation for conference play, and the things that went wrong here, we will now learn from it moving forward," Christensen said.
The Wildcats will hit the road yet again, this time heading to California for weekend matches against California Baptist on Thursday and UC Santa Barbara on Sunday.
The 'Cats will return home next Thursday, September 25th, when they open Big Sky Conference play against Eastern Washington and host Alumni Night at Wildcat Soccer Field.
