Davion Godley rushed for a career-high 193 yards in the win.

OGDEN - On a night Weber State lit the new W on the mountain behind Stewart Stadium, the Weber State football team rode a strong start and a dominant ground game to a 38–24 win over Butler Saturday night at Stewart Stadium.

The win is the second straight and improved the Wildcats to 2-2 on the season as they now prepare to open Big Sky play next week.

Weber State totaled 442 yards of offense, including 257 yards on the ground, and held Butler to 248 yards of offense. The Wildcats limited Butler to just 63 passing yards and held the Bulldogs to 0-for-14 on third downs.

Sophomore Davion Godley had a career night as he finished with 19 carries for a career-high 193 rushing yards and one touchdown. He averaged 10.2 yards per carry.

Weber State wasted no time setting the tone, marching 75 yards on its opening drive, capped by a 15-yard touchdown run by Godley.

Sloan Calder added a pair of first-quarter field goals from 29 and 26 yards to give WSU a 13–0 lead after one.

Butler closed the gap with a second quarter touchdown, but Weber State quickly answered as Jackson Gilkey connected with AJ Jayroe for a 20-yard touchdown. Just minutes later, Gilkey hit Ammon Munyer on another 20-yard strike to stretch the lead to 27–7. Butler responded with a 32-yards touchdown and a late field goal, and the Wildcats led 27–17 at halftime.

Calder made his third field goal of the night from 36 yards midway thorough the third quarter that put Weber State up 30-17, but Butler kept fighting. The Bulldogs cut the lead to 30-24 early in the fourth quarter with a 65-yard drive, but the Wildcats sealed the win with a powerful 64-yard drive, finished by Chauncey Sylvester's 3-yard touchdown run, his first career touchdown.

Gilkey was 14-of-25 passing for 185 yards and two touchdowns, while Session led the receiving corps with four catches for 63 yards. Jayleen Record had four catches for 36 yards. Eight different Wildcats caught passes. Bird Butler added 32 yards rushing and had five punt returns for 79 yards.

Defensively, Matt Herron and Mayson Hitchens led the way with eight tackles each, while Josh Hardy added two sacks.

Weber State now begins Big Sky play and will return to the road to take on nationally-ranked UC Davis on Saturday, Sept. 27, at 7 p.m. Pacific time in Davis, California.
