'Cats dominate Montana in final home game

Weber State had five players in double figures led by Viljami Vartiainen with 25 points and seven 3-pointers.

OGDEN - Weber State closed out the home portion of the season in dominating fashion against a longtime rival as the 'Cats rolled to a 92-72 win over Montana on Saturday night at the Dee Events Center. 

Weber State shot 59 percent from the field, made nine 3-pointers, and had five players score in double figures. 

The 'Cats have now won three of their last four and improved to 9-7 in Big Sky play with two regular season games remaining. Montana dropped to 8-7 in conference play and has lost five of its last six. 

The 'Cats led nearly the entire game on Saturday and shot 66 percent from the field in the first half. WSU had an 11-2 run and led 41-25, then led 45-32 at halftime. 

The lead was never less than 13 points in the second half, and the 'Cats built a 29-point lead at 82-53 with 6:31 to play. 

The star of Saturday's game was junior sharpshooter Viljami Vartiainen, who finished with 25 points and tied his career-high with seven 3-pointers. He made his first seven 3-point attempts. He finished the game 9 of 11 from the field, including 7 of 9 from 3-point range. He also had seven rebounds and three steals. 

Tijan Saine Jr. added 16 points with seven assists, and Trevor Hennig had 16 points on 6 of 7 shooting. 

Malek Gomma finished with 12 points and six rebounds, and Edwin Suarez Jr. had 10 points and also pulled down six rebounds. 

The Wildcats outrebounded Montana 34-22 and finished the night at 59 percent from the field. The 'Cats held the Grizzlies to 44 percent shooting, and WSU had 42 points in the paint. 

Weber State was also 9 of 18 from 3-point range and 17 of 21 from the free-throw line. 

The Wildcats will close out the regular season with two road games at Idaho State on Saturday, February 28, and at Portland State on Monday, March 2. 

The Big Sky Tournament will be held March 7-11 in Boise, Idaho. Weber State could still finish anywhere from second to seventh in the Big Sky standings.
