Wildcats split first day of Beehive Classic

ST. GEORGE, Utah - Weber State softball split day one of the Beehive Classic with a 9-1 (5 Inn.) loss to the Utah Utes and a dominant 14-2 victory (5 Inn.) over the Utah Tech Trailblazers.
Game One: Utah 9, Weber State 1 (5 Inn.)
Weber State saw a challenging game unfold as Utah secured a decisive victory. The third inning marked a turning point when Utah's Gomez hit a three-run homer, followed by solo home runs from Lyon and Wilson, giving the Utes a significant lead. Weber State responded with Sammy Gallegos scoring an unearned run after singles from Gallegos and Taegan Smith, but it was not enough to close the gap. The score at the end of the third inning was 5-1 in favor of Utah.
Utah extended its lead in the fourth inning with a series of hits, including another home run by Gomez, contributing to a four-run inning. Weber State managed a single hit in the inning but could not capitalize further. The score after four innings was 9-1, Utah leading.
The fifth inning remained scoreless for both teams, and the game concluded with Utah securing the win.Â
Kendall Freidinger pitched for 2.2 innings, facing 15 batters and allowing six hits and five earned runs while striking out two batters.Â
Taegan Smith posted an impressive performance with a hit that brought in the team's only RBI. Gallegos contributed with a run scored and added a hit, maintaining a solid presence at the plate. Apollonia Maldonado also secured a hit, continuing to show consistency in the lineup.
Game Two: Weber State 14, Utah Tech 2 (5 Inn.)
Utah Tech took an early lead in the first inning with a solo homer from Kahahawai, making the score 1-0 in favor of the Trailblazers.
The Wildcats responded powerfully in the second inning. Sadie Kirk led off with a single, followed by a double from Cailin Quinney that moved Kirk to third. Riley Whalen's double brought in both runners. After a series of plays, including a single by Jordan McMahon and a walk for Victoria Rey, Taegan Smith delivered an RBI single. Sienna Solis then added a two-RBI single and Apollonia Maldonado capped the inning with a three-run homer to left field. The Wildcats scored nine runs in the inning, making it 9-1.
In the third inning, the Wildcats added another run as Rey scored on a single by Maldonado, extending the lead to 10-1.
The fifth inning saw the Wildcats further solidify their lead. As Taegan Smith's double brought in four runs, increasing the lead to 14-1.
The Trailblazers added one more run in the bottom of the fifth, but the Wildcats secured a decisive 14-2 victory in five innings.
Raina Navarro pitched a complete game, allowing two earned runs over 5 innings. Navarro faced 22 batters, giving up three hits and issuing five walks while notching zero strikeouts.
Taegan Smith recorded three hits, including a double and drove in three runs. Maldonado hit a home run and collected four RBI. Whalen added a double to her two hits and drove in three runs and Rey posted two hits and crossed the plate three times.
