Wildcats drop game to Thunderbirds, close out Kickoff Classic

PHOENIX, Arizona - Wildcat softball fell 6-3 this Sunday afternoon to the Southern Utah Thunderbirds. With the loss, the 'Cats close out the Kickoff Classic 0-5 on the weekend.Â
The Thunderbirds were first on the board as they totaled two runs in the first inning.Â
Weber State had bases loaded in the bottom of the first but were unable to generate the offense needed to bring in any runs.Â
SUU extended their lead, adding two runs in the second inning for a 4-0 score, then made it 5-0 with a double to right-center field.
Taegan Smith's RBI single put the Wildcats on the board in the fifth inning, followed by an additional run scored after Sammy Gallegos singled to center field in the sixth.Â
Southern Utah finalized the scoring in the seventh inning. Although Weber State managed three hits and one run in the bottom of the seventh, it was not enough, and SUU secured the 6-3 victory.
Jade Curiel (0-2) was credited with the loss. Taegan Smith went 3-for-4 at the plate with one RBI. Abby Grundy and Gallegos both were 1-for-3 at the plate, each with an RBI.
