Wildcats split day one of San Diego Tournament against Toreros

SAN DIEGO, California - Weber State softball secured its first win of the 2026 season as it split the first day of the San Diego Tournament against the Toreros. Falling 4-3 in the earlier game, the Wildcats bounced back with a 9-5 win to close out the night.
Game One: Weber State 3, San Diego 4
San Diego scored the game's first two runs in the bottom of the second inning, thanks to two RBI singles.
Kiaira Smith delivered a two-run RBI double to right center, tying the game as Weber State answered in the third inning with two runs.
The Wildcats and the Toreros were tied 3-3 after both teams scored a run in the fourth inning. However, the Toreros secured the 4-3 victory by scoring the winning run in the bottom of the sixth, as the Wildcats failed to generate any offense in the final inning.
RJ Parra was credited with the loss after pitching 3.2 innings and facing 16 batters. Offensively, Jordan McMahon was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3. Sienna Solis contributed with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, including a double, and Kiaira Smith went 1-for-4, adding a double and two RBI.
Game Two: Weber State 9, San Diego 5
Weber State established a strong lead in the day's second game, moving ahead 4-1 in the second inning thanks to a double by Sienna Solis and an additional two unearned runs.
San Diego responded in the bottom of the third inning, totaling three runs and tying the score 4-4.
The Wildcats scored again in the fourth inning when Riley Whalen hit an RBI single. The lead was then extended in the sixth, thanks again to Solis, who singled to center field for an RBI.
After the Toreros scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to narrow the Wildcats lead to one, Weber State responded with a three-run rally in the top of the seventh. The rally was fueled by Whalen's two-RBI single and an RBI single to second base from Apollonia Maldonado.
Weber State then closed out the game 9-5 as the Wildcat defense produced a quick three up and three down in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Kendall Freidinger was credited with the win (1-1) as she pitched 5.0 innings and faced 22 batters with five strikeouts, her most strikeouts this season.
Weber State totaled 15 hits to San Diego's 10. Key players included Whalen, who had a 3-for-4 performance at the plate, driving in three runs. Solis also had a good game, going 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI, while Maldonado added to the effort, going 2-for-2 with one RBI.Â
